Inspired by an actual incident, this unassuming, wonderfully good-natured romantic comedy tells the story of a New York City street cop named Charlie (Nicolas Cage) who makes a promise to a coffee-shop waitress named Yvonne (Bridget Fonda) that will change both their lives. One day after coffee, Charlie is embarrassed to discover he doesn't have money for a tip, so he tells Yvonne that he'll share half of his winnings if the lottery ticket he's holding comes up a winner. Sure enough, he wins the jackpot--a whopping $4 million payoff--and Charlie's wife, Muriel (Rosie Perez), goes ballistic when he tells her about his deal with Yvonne. From this point, It Could Happen to You follows Charlie's dilemma as he is forced to decide the proper course of action, and director Andrew Bergman smoothly incorporates a gentle love story into this amusing crisis of conscience. Fonda and Cage have an easygoing chemistry that adds a pleasant touch to the movie's fairy-tale plot, and the story's kindhearted sentiment is never so thick that it becomes sticky-sweet or artificial. Promises Are Meant to be Kept.
If you won a lottery, would you share it with a waitress after apologizing for having no tip to give? The flick questions what some are made of...and how important is it to back up what you believe. Never boring, and still a good and relevant flick to this day. Good cast, good script!

winning the lottery is a really big deal, but what if you a well loved and respected police officer who with his partner sit down to order a meal only to get an urgent call. The cop pays the bill, but is sorry he cannot leave the waitress a tip. so he gives her the option on double the tip, or share the winnings of the lottery. she picks door # 2 the lottery. one week later the cop returns to the restaurant with a gift for the waitress, and once again asks her double the tip or share the lottery. she once again picks the lottery. The cop says " I hope you would say that' the waitress replies I bet you did. He then tells her they have won 4 million dollars. and her share was 2 million. the cops wife objects and all hell breaks loose. Can true love be worth more than 4 million?
