Tiamat's "Wildhoney" is actually considered to be a seminal doom metal record. Strange, because they are far more stoner rock than doom. Nonetheless, as a doom metal fan myself, I find Wildhoney to be pretty cool. It mixes some doom and metal elements: crunching guitars, growled vocals and pounding drums, with more unusual elements of folk and stoner rock. There are actually only 6 genuine songs, which are broken up by fairly pointless ambient instrumental sections, but the songs themselves are excellent. After the intro, the crunchingly heavy "Whatever that hurts" blends superbly into the outstanding "the AR" with eerie female backing vocals, a monumental riff and some unusual keyboards. The only song I don't really like is "A Pocket Size Sun" which is so drug influenced as to be incomprehensible. This aside, all the tracks are good ranging from Moonspell esque metal to the Opeth style acoustic guitars of "do you dream of me" and the straight up Kyuss desert rock of "A Pocket Size Sun". Overall, its a great, if a little short, record with some solid metal songs.

Quite simply a beautiful album. The previous reviewer referred to the "pointless" instrumentals but I think they pull the whole album together into one consistent entity. There are some wonderful tracks on here, not least Whatever that Hurts and The Ar, but also some more thoughtful offerings such as Do you Dream of Me? and A Pocket Size Sun (it takes a few listens before you realise it's MEANT to be ambient/ psychadelic and isn't just rubbish, but it's worth it)

Zu der Musik brauche ich wohl nichts mehr zu sagen. Jeder, der sich dieses Meisterwerk auf Vinyl zulegen gedenkt, weiß, was er da kauft. Deshalb beschränkt sich meine Bewertung auf die Qualität der Vinyl-Platte. Seit einigen Wochen hat mich das Vinyl-Fieber wieder gepackt. Ich habe mir mittlerweile eine kleine Sammlung angelegt. Nicht immer bin ich mit der Qualität der angeblich so guten,"neuen" 180g Vinyl Platten zufrieden. Oftmals sind die Pressungen einfach nur schlecht..... Rand nicht sauber entgratet, Kratzer, schiefes Label, unwucht, übertriebene Höhen, etc.... Nicht so bei der Wildhoney von Tiamat. Die Qualität des Vinyls ist von herausragender Qualität. Alles ist, wie es sein sollte: Keine Störgeräusche, keine Kratzer, Platte ist absolut plan und sauber gewuchtet, saubere Lochung. Und das wichtigste: Die Soundqualität der Neuauflage ist absolute Spitzenklasse! Kaum eine andere, neue Platte in meinem Besitz, offeriert eine solche Qualität. Hier hat Century Media ganz große Arbeit geleistet! Die einzige Kritik von meiner Seite: Das eigentlich schöne Label der A-Seite hätte ruhig etwas kontrastreicher ausfallen dürfen und die Platte kommt- wie heute meist üblich- in einer einfachen Pappinnenhülle. Eine Antistatikhülle wäre hier wünschenswert gewesen, jedoch ist das meckern auf hohem Niveau und deshalb kein Grund für einen Abzug in der Gesamtwertung. Ich tausche die Hüllen ohnehin immer sofort nach dem Auspacken gegen eine Antistatik-Hülle. Sie kosten ja nicht die Welt. Jeder, der dieses Album mag und die Liebe zum Vinyl (wieder)entdeckt hat, kann hier bedenkenlos zuschlagen. Dieses gute Stück darf in keiner Sammlung fehlen!

Este disco es un clásico que combina el death/doom del principio de los 90 con el tono psicodélico de Pink Floyd. "Whatever That Hurts", "The Air", "Visionaire" y la brillante "Gaia" son unos de los temas más importantes de la discografía de la banda sueca, pero el verdadero valor de "Wilhoney" sólo se puede descubrir escuchándolo entero.

Una verdadera joya de ese ya casi perdido buen heavymetal, una obra maestra de estos suecos.
