This book might be a intresting and refreshing read for practising engineers who is left out of broader prospect of civil engineering.

When I was signing up for college, I had never heard of civil engineering. At school, I learned that it is the people who set up the roads. I didn't have time during school to really investigate it. Now that I've graduated, I have time to read a couple hundred pages introducing the main concepts. This book fills that role *admirably*. I loved its broad-sweeping coverage of the history, business aspects, and the field's various branches. I found myself on pleasant Wikipedia detours to go deeper into subjects I was interested in (e.g. pumps, wow cool). I would have liked more technical and practical details about how to *do* civil engineering in the modern day, but I guess I'll need a real textbook for that material.

Bought as a gift so can't really comment for a young engineering student. So, can't really give a thumbs up or down.

I enjoyed the historical examples and the historical prospective in this readable book. There is a lot more to engineering than math.
