A bedtime favourite in our house
My brother has nearly all of the Julia Donaldson books at this point and this is another one of his favourites. As always Julia Donaldsons books are well written and age appropriate, with beautiful illustrations to keep a little one’s attention. There’s plenty of memorable quotes in this story (as there is in all of this authors books!). I particularly likes this story for children as it emphasises the importance of trying your best and not giving up even when something is difficult, and that with some determination, you can do whatever you put your mind to - a lovely message for children!

Great but not as memorable as the first
After having read the original innumerable times, we naturally had to get the sequel. Our daughter had fallen in love with all things Zog, Pearl and Gadabout. We were both excited to see what this new instalment had in store (yes, I was as, if not more eager to see what the expanded Zog universe had in store) and this did not disappoint. The story feels longer (although I haven’t specifically counted pages and verses) which is not a problem now my daughter is 2, but I could imagine for younger toddlers, their attention may dwindle before the end. There is the same sense of scale that was established in the original, where your imagination fills in a beautiful, sprawling medival fantasy world, and the illustrations more than do this justice. Pearl is definitely the main focus of this story, which is great for little girls seeing a female character take the lead and sticking it to the patriarchy. Zog and Gadabout are given smaller supporting roles, but still feature in the majority of the story. Although the narrative is entertaining, the story feels a little less imaginative than the first, and slightly less memorable. The verse structure and rhymes suffer the same problem too. For example, there are probably no more than one or two recurring motifs and even after having read this in excess of a couple of dozen times, the lines just don’t stick in you memory as easily as the verses from the original. I’m probably being a bit harsh, because my daughter still repeatedly asks for this book, and this is likely just my inner childrens’ book critic coming out in full force. Despite the few gripes mentioned, I still think this is a must buy for any Zog or Donaldson fan, even if it can’t quite repeat the same wonder as it’s predecessor.

A Magical Tale of Kindness and Courage
Amazing book Zog and the Flying Doctors” is a fun, rhyming story about Zog the dragon, Princess Pearl, and Sir Gadabout who fly around helping sick animals and magical creatures. When the King says Princess Pearl should only be a princess, she proves that she can be a brave and clever doctor too. With colorful pictures and a lovely message about kindness and following your dreams, this book is perfect for young children..

Julia Donaldson at her best
Zog and the Flying Doctors is as good as its predecessor Zog. My 4 year old adores it (and my 8 year old isn't averse to listening in when I read it either). JD's usual excellent rhythm, rhyme and storytelling are all present.
