LG Electronics Super Multi DVD Writer GH24NSD1 with M-DISC Support - Black

My old (2010) DVD-RW had been acting up for a few years, rarely opening when the button's been pushed (from new), failed burns, freezing up the burning software... but I didn't realise that the drive was the cause - I thought it was the old discs I had been using, and kept having to chuck them out. Then I tried a CD-RW burn in my Linux laptop and found that it was not the discs, so I decided to try a different brand. These LGs were the newest on Amazon in this price range (mine was manufactured Jan '18), and since we have several LG domestic appliances as well as a TV and two monitors that have been very reliable, I went for this one. It is very quiet, which suits my quiet PC, the plastic face plate feels substantial, and the chunky open/close button has a very good, positive feel - works really well, unlike my previous Lite-On. It reads, burns, plays, writes, erases, etc. as it should. It's even fairly quiet yet very quick at verifying. It could also erase my previously ruined CD-RW discs, too, restoring some 20-odd coasters I had kept to use in the garden. I am confident that it will last a long time. (Touch wood.) It arrived early by UPS from its German supplier, very well boxed, wrapped in bubble-pack and nestled in plastic balloons, along with a manufacturer's guarantee.

It's an ok Burner for the money. If it's speed you want then I'd advise you invest in a more high end model.

Rubbish. It's advertised as a bluray read / writer with mdisc capability but it won't even look at a bluray disc, it's only for dvd, not bluray. Out of the 4 items I've ordered from amazon in the past 2 week I've had to return 3 of them as they either didn't work or were not as advertised, I'm getting sick to death of using Amazon then having a return trip of several miles to post the item back.

Perfect replacement drive for a Mac Pro 4,1 or 5,1. (2009/2010/2012). Fast, quiet and is fully compatible, including booting from disc.

I decided to buy this because it's cheap, looks smart and was advertised as quiet. It installed into my case easily and Windows 7 automatically installed the driver so it was ready to use. You only get the bare drive so no screws, cables or driver/software disc but I knew that and didn't need any of those. I installed the free version AShampoo Burning Studio and have only used this to write one disc and image another but it seems to perform as advertised and is pretty quiet. Now, the reason I've given it four stars is because this initially made my PC crash a couple of times and appeared as a DVDRAM drive in My Computer but uninstalling it and allowing Windows to reinstall a few times changed it to DVDRW and there haven't been any further issues (although it still appears as a DVDRAM drive in Device Manager). It was disappointing to find no driver support for this on LGs site which isn't ideal but hopefully as time goes on and this is a little more tried and tested they'll provide some support. I still think it's good value for money and you may not have an initial driver install issue like I did.
