As I'm new to woodturning this may be just my lack of experience, but these kits are a little quirky. Firstly they are very nice looking and every pen I've made with them has been delightedly received. The price seems fair and the mechanism works smoothely. In the minus column though, they need a little finessing to get where you want. I found that when assembled the pen nib did not stick out enough when fully extended. I first thought I'd not trimmed my blank down all the way to the brass tube - but on subsequent tries the same thing happened. Turned out the tube is slightly too long. The ideal length would be 50mm for the rest of the kit to fit properly, but these tubes are 52mm long. I'd been cutting my blanks to over 52mm and trimming them down only just flush with the end of the tubes. All solved now. Now I use a 50mm pen blank and the brass tube sticks out by 1mm at each end. I then use the trimming tool to shave away the last 1mm of brass, before assembly. This ensures the pen nib doesn't look too shy, which is a pet peeve of mine in biros. Tricky to push in the parts as I don't have a pen vise, but I get by with my large bench vise and a bit of care. Would recommend.
