A complete beginning grammar text that uses copywork, narration, picture study, and other classical techniques to develop the young student’s language ability. Scripted lessons give the teacher direction and confidence, while exquisite pencil reproductions of great paintings are used to encourage children in oral composition. Originally published as a single two-year volume, Level 2 (Grade 2, this book) and Level 1 (Grade 1, available separately) have been redesigned as two separate simple-to-use one-year programs. Grade Recommendation: Grade 2. Black-and-white illustrations Review: First Language Lessons for the Well Trained Mind by Jessie Wise - After reading the positive reviews of this book on the internet, I decided to take a look. I thought it would be a good follow up to Dr. Ruth Beechick's book, "Language and Thinking for Young Children." "First Language Lessons" is authored by Jessie Wise, a former school teacher, administrator and mother of homeschooling graduate and author, Susan Wise Bauer. The curriculum is based on Mary Hyde's series "English for the Thoughtful Child." "First Language Lessons" is divided into two sections, first and second grade. However you can use the book with children in upper elementary grades or when you feel your child is ready to begin grammar lessons. On the first grade level your child will be covering the topics of nouns, common nouns, proper nouns, pronouns, action verbs, poem memorization, picture narration, copywork, telephone numbers, days of the week, initials, days and months, seasons, oral composition, addresses, titles of respect, capitalization and punctuation, dates, statments, questions, commands and exclamations. On the second grade level your child will be covering the topics of nouns, poem memorization, action verbs, linking verbs, types of sentences, commas, helping verbs, capitalization, picture narration, contractions, dictation, adjectives, predicate adjectives, helping verbs, interjections, conjunctions, letter writing, addressing an envelope, direct quotations, indirect quotations, quotation marks, adverbs, writing postcards, articles, prepositions, synonyms, antonyms, written compostion: ordering ideas, forming paragraphs, and copying the final work. The author includes a chapter on "How to use this book" and a "glossary of terms" for the parent to reference. Overall "First Language Lessons" builds a firm foundation in language arts for your first/second grade child. I give this curriculum an A+! Review: I have recommended this book several times since getting it! - This book is so practical. It’s easy to use, the lessons are relevant, short but meaningful. The writing prompts and activities are helpful. Love the approach.

I Love This Book, Daughter Loves It, Too! Excellent For Kearning Grammar & L.A.
Love this book! Recommended by my teacher friend, so glad I purchased this book! It is a Student Workbook and I purchased it for homeschooling our 7 yr old. At first glance, it seems kinda bland, because most textbooks for this age group have lots of colorful illustrations to catch the eye and this book does not. However, this textbook is very well written and is designed to make learning proper Grammar fun. My daughter loves this book and the lessons. The lessons are short and include reciting poems. Too much to list, but I highly recommend this book for 2nd Grade Grammar and Language Arts.

Wonderful!
So far I really like this book. My kids are surprisingly into these lessons (I say surprisingly because I didn't think grammar lessons would be so well received). Easy, short lessons which require little to no preparation but they are certainly high quality set the bar high for young learners (which I appreciate). My kids have enjoyed learning the memorization passages. I definitely plan to use these with my youngest and will buy the next level when we complete these. My 5 year old is doing level I and my 7 year old is doing level II.

Very straightforward
Purchased as used, saved a ton and it came practically brand new in great shape. Lessons are simple to follow, my second grader is just getting into structured language arts and she's really enjoying this curriculum.

Great for Delayed Reader
I bought this on the recommendation of a friend for my 3rd grader who has dyslexia. It is a wonderful transition from all workbook-based language arts programs. He loves the interactive time learning and is really excited about picking up concepts and remembering them. He gets a little bored with the memorization of the poem (we're still on the first one), so I've left that out the last couple lessons. I also really like the different levels of copy work they provide in each lesson, as we need the least demanding. We participate in Classical Conversations, and this goes along perfectly with what my children are learning about grammar there. I would recommend this for any student, but especially ones who struggle with reading and/or don't do well with workbook learning.

Simple
Exactly what I was looking for to go along with our all about reading curriculum. It is mostly verbal, so I do all 3 of my kids together. It’s been fun and simple so far.

Very good grammar program
It took me a while to love this, but I really do. My son has learned so much. You sit down and read the lesson to the child, which I thought would be condescending, but my son and I both enjoyed it. I was surprised to find (at the end of the year!) that this book is for 2nd graders; my son is in first grade and did very well with it. We did not finish all 100 lessons but had planned to continue it in the coming year.

Best grammar curriculum
We already gone through part 1 of this series. In my opinion yhis one is the best structural grammar curriculum. The good thing is that as it contained teachers prompt, we need to only follow the book, read the teachers part and rest will be done by the kid. Very rigorous, best, now nearly end of this part two and 3rd part on the way

Very good book which in each lesson you talk through what ...
Very good book which in each lesson you talk through what it says, very easy to follow. I'm going to suggest it to some adult friends learning English as a second language, it is so simple to work through but not boring or childish. Excellent for my child as audial learning is a muscle she needs to strengthen but there are written exercises in each lesson too.

Very good
A good book I use this book for home schooling. A classical method of teaching. However , you will need additional resources to supplement this book. My 6 year old seems to like it.
