My niece gives it four stars.
Bought this as a gift for my niece despite the bad reviews because it was the only thing she asked for for her birthday. My sister reports that she loves it! Not sure how durable it will be or how long it will hold her attention. Gave it four stars because my niece seems to be getting a lot of use out of it for the time being and really enjoys it.

Savings with Amazon
I cannot rate the product, it was a gift for an unknown child. I went to several WalMarts, Toys-R-Us, Kaybee etc to find this toy for a church project. At these places it was listed for $25 to $28. It was not available anywhere. I ordered it from Amazon for $9.99 and even with two day shipping it was cheaper than any store in the area.

Girl Gourmet Cupcake Maker
This is a piece of junk. The cupcakes taste bad, they only fit the trays for the toy. Our granddaughter really wanted this after all the ads, but was very disappointed when she tried to use it.

Not really impressed
We bought this for our six year old's birthday gift, and like other reviewers, we're not impressed. It works nothing like the commercials show, and the final product is not very tasty. A few hints if you are going to use it: 1) Experiment with cooking times and water amounts, rather than just going with the package directions. We get best results with slightly more water and more time. 2) Don't expect that your younger child (probably <8) can use it without significant adult help. There's a lot of assembly and reading involved. 3) Don't expect TV-quality results. It gets better each time we use it, but "Ace of Cakes" it's not.

It's NIce
The cupcake maker is nice. It takes some getting use to, but its pretty easy to use. My 6 year old daughter likes it and she enjoyed eating her cupcake, too!Just beware of frosting the cupcake. The frosting tube needs to be right above the cupcake or it will get a little messy. Make sure the frosting is a nice consistency, if its too watery... that's where the mess comes in.Enjoy...

Fun for kids - skip the mixes and frosting
The first time I used this with my daughters that were 5 and 8 at the time I thought it would be our last. As with Easy Bake the mixes are awful. The contraption you used to frost the cupcakes are way more work than it is worth. It is a mess, it is hard to control how fast it turns and it doesn't really frost the whole cupcake. Once we came to the conclusion to ditch that we were good. We get a Jiffy Mix or part of a cake mix and work from there. You can use standard cupcake liners or get the smaller ones like these at a cake store. My daughter loves to be able to mix the mix and fill the cup each time. This was also the first time I let my little one use the microwave which was a thrill for her. As long as you don't overcook them they turn out OK. Make or buy your own frosting and you are on your way.
