Teton 85L Explorer Internal Frame Backpack for Hiking, Camping, Backpacking, Rain Cover Included, Black

Great backpack! A little heavier than some other brands that cost triple or even 6 times the price. This backpack is comfortable and has lots of pockets and storage space. It Has a rainfly that stores on board to keep everything inside dry in wet weather. The zippers seem to be of good quality. This pack has plenty of daisy chains and even a couple D-rings for attaching water bottle holders to the shoulder straps in front. The adjustability of this bag is great from XL, L, to M upper body sizes The full frame and padding feels great as well and allows for air flow between your back and the pack reducing sweating. With 85 liters of storage it has plenty of space as well as a seperate sleeping bag conpartment that can be unzipped to make it one large compartment with access from either the top or bottom of bag. Should be plenty of space for those multiday hikes It has double drawstring closures at the top as well as a floating lid with storage. The floating lid is great for lashing bulkier items like a sleeping pad or larger tent on top of your pack the lashings on the lid are adjustable as well. The double draw string closure is a nice touch and is usually only found on more expensive packs. It has places for 2 water bottles, one on either side of the main pack body. The hip belt is well padded qnd adjustable and has small zippered pouches as well, these could fit gloves or other small items. These pouchess are really fine mesh type material and not waterproof but a nice touch to the hip belt none the less. It has space at the top and bottom. There are also adjustable rear loading straps on the bottom side of the back for another item that would take up too much space inside the pack. Also the side stoarage compartments also have pockets open tops and bottoms for longer items like treking poles or even a rifle could be held in place vertically on both sides of the pack. In my opinion it's a comfortable and well made backbacking pack for the price that looks and feels like it will last for many years but only time will tell.

Spacious, Comfortable, and Built for the Trail This 65L Teton Explorer backpack really impressed me from the first trip out. The size hits a sweet spot—it’s large enough to handle multi-day hikes and camping gear, but not so bulky that it becomes unmanageable. I was able to pack a sleeping bag, tent, clothes, cooking gear, and still had room to spare. The adjustable torso length is one of the standout features. I could dial it in for a comfortable fit, and the padded shoulder straps and hip belt did an excellent job distributing weight. Even after hours of hiking, my back and shoulders felt surprisingly fresh. The airflow system along the back also helped reduce sweating, which is always a plus. Another thoughtful touch is the included rain cover—it packs right into its own pocket, so you’re never caught unprepared if the weather turns. Pockets are well laid out: the side mesh pockets are deep and secure, the top lid compartment is roomy, and the front zip pocket is handy for things you need quickly. The sleeping bag compartment at the bottom is also convenient, saving me from unpacking the whole bag to get at it. The zippers and buckles feel durable, and the stitching seems solid enough for long-term use. It’s not an ultralight pack, but the trade-off is that it feels sturdy and dependable. Bottom line: This is a versatile, comfortable, and well-designed backpack that offers a lot of value for the price. It should suit beginners and experienced backpackers alike.

No dislikes. The price was great. It's exactly what I wanted. Weight compares to most 75L backpacks. If you want a lighter pack its going to cost much more. Backpack arrived with a torso setting for XL. My torso length is 23". I reset backpack to M = medium. Fits great now. Added 30 lbs. and started working on the other four adjustments. Waist/hip straps, shoulder straps/ pack to shoulder straps, and the small strap attached between the shoulder straps. I moved this one down about three inches with the strap fully out. I hang my phone and rag on this strap. I am now training for a long hike. 3 to 6 miles daily with 45 lbs. added to pack. 50 lbs total. I make adjustments as I hike for comfort. Pack has plenty of internal space including internal pocket for water bladder. Plenty of outside pockets, straps, and tie off points on the pack and on the shoulder straps. I've hiked 36 mile so far this month. The pack feels great. I've read were some people did not get the rain cover for the pack. It is hard to find if you do not know where to look. Its located in the very bottom of the pack on the outside. Velcro opening that looks like a seam. Almost hidden but that is the rain cover storage pocket. Very hard to open if pack is full. If you expect rain, put the cover in a better pocket or just cover the pack with it. This is not a day pack or weekend pack but can be used as one. This is a good multi-day multi-mile backpack and built to carry what you will need. With this in mind, the pack does not come with a backup buckle for the waist strap. Its plastic and could break. I've already gotten one. Easy to replace but a bad day if you don't have a backup. I hope you find this helpful. Happy trails to you all....

This is my initial review on the bag. I will add a followup review after a 3 day backpacking trip next weekend. Pros: (Quite a few, generally happy with initial inspection) Lots of adjustments A decent number of pockets and options for storage(example would be a mesh velcro pocket on the face of the bag good for maps, energy bars, etc.) Straps seem to be of decent overall quality, and there is what looks like a sleeping bag/sleeping pad strap near the bottom of the bag. There is also two straps on the very top of the bag that seem like they could be used to strap something down. Nice to have the option to securely strap some gear to the outside of the bag. 2 Mesh water bottle pockets on either side, couldn't tell by the product description or pictures but they are there! Phew. Bright Yellow Rain Cover is located in a nifty pocket at the very bottom of the bag, nice feature. A few loops on the outside for strapping things down. Holds up to a 3 liter bladder with an exit whole and clips to keep in reach. Seems to be of Durable build and quality. Field tests soon. Cons: (Only one real con for me, two cons if you are taller) Sleeping bag compartment is SMALL, well actually its initially more of an issue with it's opening. I have a decently small winter bag that I can't fit in when its in it's stuff sack, at all. If I take the bag out of the stuff sack and stuff it into the compartment, it just BARELY fits, nice to know that it could though. For me, I will most likely use the straps on the outside of the bag to hold my sleeping bag, I have hooked it up and it seems to work pretty well(Almost like it was made to hold a sleeping bag). 4000ci is not that much room for a winter backpacking trip so having my sleeping bag on the outside will create a decent amount of space for say my clothes, sleeping pad, and cooking gear in the sleeping bag compartment. If you are someone who must have a sleeping bag compartment, this will work for summer camping but a winter sleeping bag will be very tough to fit in, the one and only con for me but big enough to deter some people. If you are someone who doesn't mind sticking the sleeping bag on the outside where it would work out just fine in the bag's straps, then this con is not that much of an issue. Not for TALL people. This bag seems to fit me ok but I am not a very big guy. I'm about 5'9 - 5'10 and it is a close fit. I think it will work just perfectly for me but if you are above 6 ft or anything, beware(then again I am pretty new to backpacking and this is MY first pack). Overall: In the end, I bought this smaller bag over the cheaper and larger cuscus bags because of the many reviews those had with cheap build quality. They get a lot of space with their big bag but have a lot of issues with bag quality. I sacrificed some space for quality and extra features. I am a little disappointed by the small backpack compartment but if I have my pack on the outside, this bag should work quite perfectly. I'd say for summer camping this bag is Perfect and for winter camping, if you can stick your sleeping bag on the outside, this bag is near-perfect. I will do an update in about a week after I give this bag a good hard test. 4/5 stars for not being 100% "perfect" but an overall good bag. UPDATE: Went for my November 3 day backpacking trip and this bag performed perfectly. Was comfortable and carried all of my gear with ease. I was able to pack up everything and more. The pack worked as good as I hoped it would and with the sleeping bag in the straps on the outside, it was a non-issue. No complaints, no problems, this bag is awesome. Great deal. Love it.

Teton Sports Explorer 85L THE GOOD *Price *Lots of Pockets *Quality *Decent Comfort (when packed with heavier weight lower down) *85L is the right size for my needs *Included rain cover THE BAD *Sweat Buildup where the pads touch your back *Mesh pockets not very easy to get Nalgene bottle into while on the move *Could use more height adjustment on the shoulder straps *Not much color choice on the 85L size CONCLUSION I highly recommend this pack. While there are a few things that could use improvement, on the whole, I don't think there is a better combo of price/features/performance out there. Read on for details. I thought pockets on packs had gone extinct. Thank you Teton Sports for continuing to make a backpack with external pockets for keeping me organized and keeping my important gear easily at hand instead of having to dig into the middle of the pack to find my raincoat/toilet paper/map/battery/flashlight/camera/water filter/etc./etc.! ALL of the major outdoor gear makers are moving towards packs that have 1 big compartment and that's it. Or maybe they have one token pocket in the lid. Like they think we are all ultralighters and will pass up a product because they added 4 oz. to it for pockets and zippers. What's crazy is many of these minimalist packs are heavier than the Explorer 85L *cough*cough Aether 85L *cough. So, you give up convenience AND still get a heavier pack all for 3 times the cost of the Explorer 85L I am replacing an Osprey Atmos 65 AG that was comfortable but often too small for all the gear/food/clothes I wanted to bring with me on a trip. Because I wanted an array of pockets, this Teton Sports pack was about the only one left on the market that met my needs at any price. It is fantastic that it is relatively inexpensive too. There were a few others with pockets on Amazon, but none from any company I recognize. Teton Sports has been on Amazon for a while and at least has a legit website and looks like a good company, so I decided to take a chance on this pack. The 85L size of the Explorer is great so far. I've taken 2 trips with it and just finished packing for a 3rd and haven't filled it to capacity yet. It is nice to know I have space left if I need it, like for more food on a longer trip or bulkier clothes for a Winter trip. The quality of the Explorer appears to be good so far. Everything felt solid and the buckles didn't feel like they were in danger of breaking when cinched down tightly. Comfort while hiking was decent, though the Atmos was a bit more comfortable, particularly the mesh back that reduces sweat build up. The pads that contact your back on the Explorer trap sweat and soaked my shirt. You really notice it when you take your pack off for a break and the back of your short becomes freezing from the wet/evaporation. But most packs have this problem- the Atmos AG was an outperformer in this area. At first, the pack felt like it was pulling me over backwards. I moved stuff around and put my heavy bear canister filled with food in the sleeping bag compartment and my lighter sleeping back in the main compartment and that fixed the pulling backwards problem. This pack likes the heavier stuff down low. I found the shoulder straps tended to sit too low, even on the XL setting. I'm not that big (5'10") so was a bit surprised by that. I was able to move the height adjustment up past the XL by utilizing less of the adjustment loops and got the pack comfortable. I don't think it was designed to be used that way, but it works and was comfortable for me. There are a couple of other nice touches on this pack. The outside pockets have pass-throughs behind them that let you slide trekking poles or tent poles behind them for easy, secure packing. Also, the hip belt pockets have velcro at the bottom that lets you flip them up so you can put the tails from the hip belt behind them and not have them hanging down and flopping around. This is much better than the Osprey where you have to try to push the strap through to tuck it away. There are a couple other areas that could be improved on this pack. Minor nits to pick, not any deal breakers. First, the lid can't be pulled down enough when the pack is lightly loaded to cover all of the top opening. It leaves a little gap near your neck where water can get it. Second, I like to put my Nalgene bottles in the mesh pockets. While they are angled slightly towards you, it is still a little awkward to get them out and back in while on the move. Teton Sports Designers: check out how Osprey does their pockets with top entry or front entry. They are much easier to use this way. In conclusion, I was thrilled to find this pack that met my needs at a good price. Despite Teton Sports gear not being featured in my usual gear mags and review websites I turn to for opinions, I am impressed with the quality of this pack and highly recommend it.

Wow! I have to admit that I was a little skeptical when I saw the price ($55 for the green/black model when I bought it), but I knew that I did NOT want to spend a ton of money for something I'll use at most a couple times a year. I need something that's tough enough, large enough, versatile enough, and practical enough to use backpacking or for overnight trips. For the few times I've used this pack so far, it has absolutely fit the bill. When full, it sits comfortably, even after hauling about 35 lbs around in it for 5-6 hours. It doesn't have loads of room inside, but I count that as a good thing, otherwise I know I'd be tempted to overpack. It should have just the right amount of space for 4-5 days, if I pack smart. The material, padding, and zippers all seem tough and not likely to fail on me when I need them. There are enough pockets, loops, and the like to be versatile. I especially like the lid, which has a double pouch: one is accessible from the bottom of the lid (when open), and the other from the top. It's big enough for those things you need to grab in a hurry on a hike: raingear, trail lunch, headlamp, first aid kit, and the like. The side pockets are very roomy. I was even able to fit a medium-sized plastic bowl and mug in the large side pocket pocket. The bottom compartment is perfect for a sleeping bag--it worked pretty well with my bag just rolled up, but with my bag in a compression sack, I can fit everything I need for sleeping in that bottom compartment. If you want to use the tool loops for trekking poles, you'll need something to attach them to the bag higher up. I made some webbing out of shock cord ($5 total for the cord and a toggle) between the two daisy chain sets of loops on the front. I haven't used this configuration outdoors yet, but I'm hoping it will do the trick not only for my poles, but also for anything else I may want to stick in there. The side pockets have a pass-through space behind them--for tent poles or anything else long--, but it's not very useful if you need to access those items on the trail, especially if the pockets are full. I'm sure it would be fine if you stuck your tent poles in there, then loaded up the pockets, and didn't need to touch the poles until you got to camp again, but it's a real pain to get things in and out of there with the pockets full. But that's a very minor thing. Are there better packs out there? Sure. Is the difference worth $150-$250? I can't imagine it is! So, overall, I'm extremely pleased with this bag. There are lots of YouTube reviews of this pack, and the consensus is that it's a tough and very useful pack, and you absolutely can't beat the price. I completely agree!

I'm an avid day hiker but wanted to get into the world of multi-day hiking/backcountry camping. I bought this inexpensive pack a year ago and have used and abused it in the heat AND rain. I'm a 5'9" 155 lb male and this pack fits me perfectly when adjusted properly. When I knew it was going to rain one night I dressed it with the included raincover and left it on a large rock outside my tent. My paper map was still in the mesh pocket. It rained HEAVILY and everthing -- much to my surprise -- was still DRY. I was impressed! It fits everything I need for extended trips and would trust it for a 5-7 day 3 season trip. It has a separator which divides the bags main compartment from the sleeping bag however I recommend unzipping it and using the whole pack as one huge gear dump because everything just fits more nicely that way and compacts much easier. Love the side pockets to store my water filter, stove/pot/ and snacks. I wish it had waist pockets though for easier access to things like a camera or snacks. I also love that it has top and bottom straps (it can strap down my tent on top and my thermarest on the bottom w/ no problem which makes for even more space inside). Two bottle pockets on each side make it very convenient for easy access to water bottles. Can easily fit a 32oz bottle on each side (nice when hiking in dry environment where water is sparse) It also has a compartment inside to house a bladder up to 3L i believe. I would easily buy this pack again when mine gives up on me. SO FAR ive had not one tear/rip or malfunction, however the zippers are a bit stubborn but easy to get used to. A much inexpensive, quality, alternative to the $200+ packs at REI. GREAT FOR BEGINNERS. I was so impressed with the bag that I ordered a Teton Sports Trailhead 20F degree sleeping bag which fits perfectly in the sleeping bag compartment. Pros: All the room. So many pockets. Top AND Bottom straps Rugged and can take abuse Very inexpensive Removable sleeping bag compartment separator/divider Included raincover does an amazing job Worth more than it is Very adjustable to various body types/sizes Cons: Sometimes stubborn zippers No waist/hip belt pockets for easy access to snacks/camera

Alright let me start off by stating: "This is a sick backpack." This thing has oodles of awesome features, like tons of space, sleeping bag compartment, rain gear, and that amazing lumbar support. Ohh! I got this backpack for a solo, off the grid, camping trip I was going to take for about a week. Silly enough my initial plans were dashed once I ran into a grizzly on my first day, and then everything went downhill from there. Screaming and running through the woods, while simultaneously wetting myself, drew out an even bigger threat: Big Foot. I'm just telling you now folks that he is no legend, but they exaggerated on his shoe size. He is a sixteen at most. Also let me add that the support around your waist makes it a heck of a lot easier to sprint quickly through a dense forest. Comfortable too. The sight of him scared off the grizzly, but that only made him focus on me. After a little while he cornered me at some seaside cliffs, where I was forced to jump. I was adrift for about five hours before I spotted a cargo ship. Ripping off the bright, yellow colored rain gear I flagged them down. They miraculously saw me and hoisted me aboard. The crewmen told me that they were heading for Alaska and were already behind schedule so they could not wait for the coast guard to pick me up. So I was stuck with these guys for about a week, and they had no room for me down below. Thankfully my pack was huge enough to hold my sleeping bag and camp mattress. I guess this bag also comes with an epiphany generator, because as I spread out under the stars, and listened to the ocean, I began to contemplate my life and how unexciting it has been up until this point. I couldn't help but wonder what it might be like if I quit my job at the bank, and asked out that girl working at the fabric store across the plaza. When the ship finally docked in a little fishing village I bid farewell to Bogdon, who had become my friend during my time aboard. Before I left he told me to search for his friend Billy, whom lived just an hours walk, and that he could help me out. He also told me to say "Udder" when I found him. I located Billy, and told him that Bogdon sent me. I told him my story and he seemed skeptical at first, but then I said the word Bogdon instructed me to use. Billy's face instantly went red and he believed everything I said from that point on. Turns out Billy was a mail carrier and was heading down south to pick up some mail tomorrow, and that he could drop me off near where my adventure began. We took off without a hitch the next morning, and were flying over the beautiful Canadian landscape. Suddenly the plane started making some weird noises before it started to dip. Billy grabbed the only parachute on board and jumped, while I was left in a plane hurdling towards the forest below. Again my life flashed before my eyes, and again I was in awe at how mundane it was. I blacked out from the stress. When I came about I found myself alive! The plane had landed hard, but I was okay! Hopping out I grabbed my pack and started heading due south, using my compass that I kept in one of the many pockets. I hiked for four days, surviving on what food I could find, before I began to recognize my surroundings. My car was no more than a half an hours walk. I made it to the clearing where my transport was, only to find you-know-who hanging around it. That's right, Big Foot. Before I could find cover he spotted me and charged. I retreated back into the woods and hid. I knew that he wasn't going to just let me leave, so I came up with a plan. Taking the most sweatiest and nastiest clothes I could had I fitted them onto my pack. I guess they forgot to mention that it makes a great decoy too. I then started hooping and hollering, luring the beast my way. I heard him coming so I took off, praying he would take the bait. He did. While I ran I heard the pack being ripped apart, my heart faltered a little, but I couldn't stop. I made it to the clearing, hopped into my car and put it in drive. Just before I peeled out Big's emerged, holding what used to be my pack. The sight of my backpack completely destroyed, made me choke up. Right before they were out of my sight I muttered a prayer for my container-friend, thanking it for providing me with ease of access to everything I had, and for being so comfortable to carry. Finally I bid it farewell. I have since quit my dead-end job, and asked out the girl at the fabric store. She said "no" sadly, but at least I did it. I can not promise you that what happened to me will happen to you if you purchase this brand of backpack. I can't promise you that it will give you anything more than what it offers on this site. this is just my experience while having the backpack in my possession. However, I can say that if you are looking at this backpack in hopes of having an awesome adventure, then you can do a heck of a lot worse than the "TETON Sports Explorer 4000 Internal Frame Backpack." Hope this helps whoever read this.

I used the pack once for a short overnight pack trip. It holds lots and carried quiet well. I’m 5’10 and it fit me nicely between the M and L setting for the torso. I had it loaded to 35 pounds and it felt very comfortable. I would recommend this pack to anyone not wanting to break the bank.

I've only taken it on one trip thus far but I can say that it's performed well. Time will tell but the workmanship seems top notch and the attention to detail is good. In fact, all the features of this bag can be a bit overwhelming at first but everything seems so well thought out. It seems infinitely adjustable for various sized folk and I can imagine that it's performance is greatly dependent upon getting this fit right so spend some time on this. Once set up correctly, the pack floats on your hips and the shoulder straps simply keep it in place rather than taking all the weight. I packed way too much stuff on our first trip and I was amazed at how well the pack took the load. I also purchased the Teton LEEF Adult -18c sleeping bag and unfortunately it seems too big to fit into the bottom compartment which, according to their marketing, is supposed to hold a TETON sleeping bag. Perhaps the -7c version will fit? Sadly, I wasn't able to take advantage of this particular feature. It would have been nice if they had paired various products together in their marketing to show what works with what. One of the things that I liked about this version (compared to the smaller one) was that the side pockets are only attached along their sides allowing you to pass something (like a set of tent poles, a saw or an axe?) in behind them. Many bags that I looked at try to add pockets by including zippers on the side of the bag that allow access to compartments inside (perhaps for a more streamlined look?)... or worse, pockets that are not pleated but simply sewn into the exterior of the bag. The result is a pocket that you can't use when the pack is really full. This bag has pleated pockets on the exterior with good quality zippers and flaps to keep some rain out. I found them really useful for keeping gear that I needed quick access to while hiking and setting up camp. So far, I have to say that this bag is everything they claimed it would be and I'm very happy with it.

My other backpack did NOT travel well for a five week trip to South America. The top closing flap did not extend, it made things difficult when my bag was extremely full. I think this bag will be exactly what I need.
