Great purchase! And tips on how to get around the lack of a timer feature on the GoPro.
There's not a lot I can say that hasn't already been said about how fantastic the camera itself is, so I'll focus on the "refurbished" aspect and things that are less than stellar on mine. Even though this is a "refurbished" product by any other name, it arrived like new and for the most part everything has worked flawlessly. I'm not too worried about it being refurbished, as it comes with a full one-year warranty, and in addition I purchased the 3-year "accident protection" warranty which covers accidents from day one and everything else after the manufacturer warranty runs out. I feel pretty confident that any issues I run into will be covered, but will update my post if I encounter any problems. I am concerned about how sloppy/loose the USB-C port is, but I don't know if that's normal play for either the GoPro or the cable they provided or whether my unit is flawed. Maybe that's why it was a "refurb"? However, I haven't had any issues so far with connectivity or with charging. I'm a little less than thrilled with the android app to remotely control the GoPro. I've had some issues connecting or remaining connected to the unit, though usually a restart of the android device will solve the problem. There doesn't seem to be rhyme or reason as to why sometimes it won't connect or will drop connection. However, this is a common problem with a lot of bluetooth devices, so I'm not going to knock them too hard for it. As others may have pointed out, the GoPro lacks a timer function. I think between voice control ("GoPro Start Recording") and the android app, GoPro must have felt it was redundant. But voice control is not always optimal from a distance or in noisy environments, and there are several reasons you may not be able to use the remote app (for example, an older smart phone that won't run the app). In such situations, a solution DID occur to me. Record your voice saying "GoPro Start Recording" onto any voice recorder that you can set near the GoPro for playback. Add as many seconds of blank space as you need before the command. Voila, an ad hoc timer!! Alternatively, you can call one stationary phone near the GoPro from another remote phone, answer the stationary phone and put it on speaker phone. Walk to wherever you need to be in the shot with the remote phone, then say "GoPro Start Recording". This works quite well - I've done it with 2 cell phones in a noisy environment. But it's a good idea to put the remote phone on "mute" until you're ready to issue the command. Finally, I should mention that I purchased a HoHem iSteady Pro2 3-axis Gimbal for my GoPro, to add a little extra stabilization as well as a means to grip the camera better for handheld work. Additionally, it allows you to set up hands-free and time-lapse pans and tilts, and can be used to charge the GoPro. I think it was a very wise addition for just $100. I also sprang an extra $17 for the "smartphone holder clip" which will be handy now to hold a larger screen to see what I'm recording, but I eventually intend to use it to hold an audio recorder and stereo microphone for better sound (syncing up post-production).

They are great!
These gopros are great! the video quality is better than expected, when properly configured. I do find myself doing a bit of post-production, but it truly depends on the project. All specs, photo and video quality, splash and waterproof features are just some of the benefits of the Hero 5 black. Personally I didn't care about retail packaging, so saving a few bucks on OEM is always welcome. The batteries last quite a long time, depending on how you configured the camera. Time-lapse is really fun to do, photo plus video is extremely useful. I record mostly at 2.7k 4:3 and 4k, but for projects that require photo and video at the same time, 1080p is plenty good. The accessories that came with it are extremely sturdy and definitely feel high quality as compared to the normal third party action camera adapters you find pretty much everywhere. The one thing I like the most, is being able to leave the cameras connected to the charging hub, and that to an extension cord to keep the cameras in time-lapse mode uninterrupted for hours without worry. I am building a custom rig for special settings and configurations, but that's a whole different story. I could be picky about this, but being unable to keep the camera fully waterproof while connected might be a minus, but with a little bit of ingenuity you can get around that problem. I don't need to do that for the most part, but I always keep it in mind, specially with long timelapse recordings under unpredictable weather. Something I don't like much, probably how much the battery is drained when wireless connected devices are enabled, like the controller, mobile device, etc. I pretty much have to make sure that the cameras are all charged up when it's time for recording, otherwise I'll be with a half-dead battery the moment I head out to shoot. Voice commands don't always work as they should, which is why I use the remote mostly. I do lose connectivity to the remote sometimes, depending on distance or some other factors. I press record or shutter and sometimes to my surprise not all the cameras were working as they should. Live and Learn. The cameras do overheat after extended video recording sessions (2.7k+). If the battery dies, DO NOT charge right away... wait until it cools down to room temperature to extend their life. --- I have been using these for almost a year now and I've made several custom rigs and adapters, for advanced shooting. Working in a multi-cam environment is extremely easy with the remote and these cameras. Sometimes I just need one or two cameras... but whenever I need 3, 6 or more of them, they work in great unison with the old 2 button remote. You do have to pair it again, after extended inactivity (a couple of days), sometimes even with my iphone gopro app as well. I was waiting for the hero 6 to see if it's worth it, but seeing their specs, I think I'll just buy a few more 5's instead. I can honestly say they are worth every penny. I had no issues with the packaging or the cameras, so I'm happy

Using it for windsurfing - great
1. Hero5 vs $50 170deg action cameras: I bought two $50 4K action cameras claiming 170deg field of view (FOV) and returned both - I need wide field of view to capture myself and the windsurfing board from a short distance, but these cheap cameras lie about 170deg FOV, they were both 90degree FOV, I checked - with 90deg FOV you see only 2 feet of a fence from 1 foot away, with 170deg you should see 20 feet, huge difference. Hero5 claims ~122 deg FOV, and it really is (3.6 feet from 1 foot). 2. GPS feature - I don't have to carry a phone to record my GPS speed, and HERO5 records it and it can overlay GPS data on your video - speed etc. Very cool. 3. It is waterproof as is and its case looks very strong - though I bought a third party waterproof case for it, the battery and connector doors of the camera get sand into them when in water if used as is and I did not like that. The case also adds additional protection - it is cheap and replaceable in case it breaks. 4. Voice control - it works in low wind, once you get to windsurfing planning winds (20mph) it messes up, so I got smart wifi remote to control it. 5. GoPro Quick video editor - it allows to overlay speed/map/acceleration etc. on videos, and one can cut out clips from videos into separate files. Unfortunately it cannot join clips and add your own music to them, so you will have to use a third party editor for that. Its "Highlights" mode is pretty, but I think it is useless - they have preset music track(s) and it joins clips of fixed length (not ajustable by user) making 1 minute (fixed length) clip. PS: After 5 days of use camera is now resting at the bottom of a lake. Its clipping holder is clearly not strong enough to resist windsurfing (had up to 30 knots wind today, and camera was attached to the boom). The holder was still attached to the boom, but it unclipped and there was no camera. Unfortunately camera itself has no way to be secured to a safety rope). Anyway, I will be buying another one - I still like the camera), but I will wrap a rope around the holder to keep it from unclipping...

Great camera, few annoyances.
Camera seems to work wonderfully, but I have some complaints. My instruction manual was only in spanish and another language, no english. So I had to look up the instructions online for how to take off the case (first GoPro). Along the way I tried to take the charging door off, and it snapped in the process! GoPro sells this as a replacement part, but its $20. I learned how to take the door off from a YouTube video, and followed the steps but it still snapped. This was probably my fault for not being careful enough, but I shouldn't have to worry about accidentally breaking my charging door off depending on which way I pull it off (especially when the camera as a whole is pretty darn strong). The charging cable is just a teeny 2-3 ft USB cable. Not the end of the world since you can just buy a longer USB cable for cheap, but its still an added expense. Another frustration is that their software can't be installed on Mac OSX < 10.10. I have 10.9.5... This is my fault for not checking, but NO other software I own or buy nowadays has this restriction as I only bought this iMac 2 or 3 years ago. I use Adobe Premier and After Effects, but I would have liked to have a Quik software to process videos straight from GoPro (pun totally intended). As I said, this camera seems to work great (especially for the low price!). However, you can tell that they design these to a price and then sell you some very expensive accessories. If I bought this at $500 and it included instructions in english, better packaging, a longer charging cable, and a more robust sliding door (or just accessories that are more reasonably priced), this review would be at 5 stars. I'm probably not exactly their target market, as i'd rather pay a little more for those small details to be fixed. Most people are just looking for a super cheap, small, awesome camera.

Buy the one without the e-commerce packaging.
Understand that by purchasing this option, you are risking receiving a broken/damaged unit that you might not be able to return in some instances. I really don't know the extent to which buyers are getting bad units, but judging from the reviews it is happening substantially more often with the E-commerce packaging option. It appears that this "E-commerce packaging" is, at least in part, a way for gopro to resell it's refurbed/returned units. Personally I went with it because I was in a time crunch and the shipping option was faster at the time. For the record I received a working non-blemished unit, however my advice is spend the extra $8 or so and wait the extra shipping time(if applicable) and get a unit (B01M14ATO0) that you can be more reasonably assured is in good working order. Also from the reviews, I don't recommend submerging the unit in water despite the company's claim that it is waterproof. If you are going to put it under water you should get a protective case, and the fact that there are numerous options on the market (including here on amazon) is a clear red flag. I haven't put the thing in water, nor will I. From the looks of the unit I can say that if I didn't know any better, it never would have occurred to me that it could safely be submerged in water. Additionally, I read in the reviews that the company does not cover water damage under the standard warranty that comes with the unit; it's worth looking into. If you plan on going underwater with your unit you should know whether the warranty covers water damage before you buy. I got this as a tool to help my son improve his motocross skills. Being able to watch and discuss the footage has helped, but I have yet to see whether it will be $300 worth of help. Time will tell. Immediately after filming, you can wirelessly stream full clips from the unit to your smartphone with the app relatively seamlessly, but that would probably depend on the phone (S8+ in my case). If you have a tablet or laptop to bring to the track, even better. Suggested extras that you're going to want: At least one extra battery and the external charger for when you are out and about: B01LZHRYJS Front and back adhesive screen protectors: B01M8J9ONB They are cheap and easy to replace. The unit's glass lens cover and rear screen not so much. Well worth the $10. I haven't noticed any issues in touch functionality as a result of the protector, nor have I noticed any problems with video quality. Another thing to think about is extra mounts and adhesive strips for when they go bad or you want to place multiple mounts at once: B01L13RXBS Finally, a decent carrying case is worth it. This camera is an expensive piece of equipment that you don't want to be just throwing in your back pack or whatever it may be: SM1408005 The specific products I suggested are what I purchased, and have worked well so far for my particular needs. Obviously go with what suits your needs best.

Very nice action cam. Still not sure if it's new or refurb.
Received mine about a week ago and have been testing it out and have used it a couple of times. Everything on the camera seems to work just fine. I cannot tell just by looking at the camera if it is actually brand new or refurbished. Everything in the box was in brand new-like condition. The sticker that came on my box does say "NewItem" so that makes me think it is new. The camera and everything in the box was well packaged. The camera itself performs about as I'd expect. The sounds quality does seem better than my Hero 4 Silver and I like that it is waterproof without the need for the shell. Video quality is great. From what I understand it's the same sensor as the Hero 4 Black, so if you have that already then this might not be a big upgrade. I would assume it is not waterproof with the charging door removed. As one reviewer commented that their charging door broke, I can see how this could easily happen. I don't think it's a flaw just for the cameras from this specific batch or seller, but for the Hero 5 in general. I worry each time I remove the charging door that I might break it. I hope there are replacements that are available that aren't stupidly priced when/if I do break mine. I ran some battery tests and here are the results I got Unless otherwise noted, I used these settings for testing. Any differences are noted in the test entries. GoPro Hero5 Black - v 2.00 Field of View (FOV) - Linear Front light OFF Video Stabilization (VS) - ON Voice Commands - OFF GPS - ON Audio Auto WiFi - ON Auto Low Light - ON 1080p at 60 fps Results are Hours:Minutes Test 1 - 1:45 Test 2 - 1:44 Test 3 - 1:42 Test 4 VS OFF - 1:48 Test 5 VS OFF Wide - 1:45 Test 6 VS OFF Wide 30 fps - 1:54 Test 7 4K30fps VS OFF Wide - 1:27 Overall I really, really like it and can't wait to use it out, along with my Hero 4 Silver, during some trips later this year.

Better than my Hero 7 Black
I was honestly expecting this to overheat constantly like my Hero 7 Black does. I decided to give it a chance anyway since I had only heard positive things about the Hero 5 Black. This thing works great and seems to be very reliable, unlike my Hero 7 Black. It hasn't overheated once, and I'm able to use it exactly what I need it for. The battery life on this is way longer than than my Hero 7 Black is, too. Not sure exactly what the deal with this e-commerce packaging is. The Hero 5 Black I received from this listing was obviously used before, but it has no major defects from what I can see. All of the LED lights stopped working the day I got it, but I'm okay with that. The screen and the lens have 0 scratches, and the video quality on this is what I'd expect it to be. The frame that came on mine is not an official GoPro frame, but I'm okay with that, too. I'm still able to mount it to all of my other accessories like normal. I think I can put my frame from my Hero 7 Black on it, too, but I haven't tried that yet. I now use my Hero 5 Black at least a few times a week, and my Hero 7 Black just sits unused in my closet.

Great quality with horrible software
I was excited, I was excited to start motovlogging, I was excited to be able to do everything in one sleek unit, boy was I wrong. The unit that arrived was in mint condition, and I immediately popped it on the side of my helmet, first couple of recordings went great, then I noticed the software issues. Its been 4 months, 4 months since ive been able to upload footage. FOUR MONTHS, the camera wont connect to my desktop, laptop, tablet or phone by cable. So I said okay, ill try the app, NADDA, as one last ditch effort I bought a card reader. Pop the card in, and finally, something happens. Until I open the card up in the computer and find all the footage is corrupted. All of it, and every time I try to record, immediatley corrupted on EVERY computer, device, I try it on. Go Pro has been going downhill for awhile, and while the quality is great, the software will be a consistant issue, they need to turn the tide to earn my trust again, time to join other motovloggers against gopro.

Fantastica!
