Amazon Basics 12 Sheet High Security Micro Cut Paper, Credit Card and CD Shredder with 6 Gallon Easy Emptying Bin, Casters, Black

I bought this to replace an old, noisy strip shredder that had seen its better days. I had a box of papers to shred and didn't want to have to take them to a commercial shredder, as my old shredder would only handle about 5 sheets at a time. Based on a Wirecutter review, I picked this up. I also picked up a roll of plastic bags to hold the residue. The only assemble required was pushing the casters into place. The plastic construction made that an adventure for this klutz, but I managed to complete the task without drawing blood, so that's a win. After putting it under my desk and plugging it in, I put a bag in the bin and began shredding. The first thing I noticed was how quiet it was. After the shrieking of my old shredder, this one barely made a sound. It handled 10 sheets of paper quickly and noiselessly, dropping confetti into the bin. Old credit cards shredded just as easily. I was able to get through my backlog of old bills fairly quickly. The shredder never overheated. A couple of times, the Bin Full light came on and it stopped, but all I had to do was pull the bin out and shake it down. Overall, it's a great experience, especially with the very low noise level. If you're not already shredding old bills, medical forms and other sensitive documents, you NEED a shredder like this. Do not put them in the recycling bin or the trash can. These days, you cannot be too careful. You also need a VPN, but that's another product for another time. Bottom line: if you need a shredder, you cannot go wrong with this one.

I’m super happy with this purchase. This shredder is honestly my little helper. Before, I never threw papers away, I had to tear everything up by hand into tiny pieces. It took forever. Now it’s instant. I just feed a small stack of papers (I usually do a bit less than the max, just to be safe), and it shreds everything quickly and into very small pieces. Works great, no issues at all. I’m really satisfied. Definitely recommend.

This shredder by Amazon is not Basic. It is exceptional. I love this shredder for a number of reasons. First, it is sturdy, quality built and smartly packaged. Second, it uses a Micro paper Cut (the Best cut) that most shredders do not use. You will usually have to pay much more for a good Micro Cut Shredder. No one could take the shredded papers and reconstruct any documents. That is high security. It is cut almost at the per letter level. Third, It has at least a 6 gallon paper bin which is great. Fourth, it shreds and destroys almost anything. Shreds up to 12-sheets of 20-pound bond paper at a time, including staples and small paper clips. It has a slot to destroy CDs, DVDs, and credit cards (one at a time). For higher security, the paper slot can also be used to destroy credit cards as well. I believe they also make a 18-sheet and 150-sheet shredder at a higher cost. I have had many shredders before, and this is the best so far considering the price. I will buy another Amazon Basics 12-sheet shredder or 18-sheet shredder in the near future. After serving 24-years in the military and 15-years in the Department of Defense, I'm trained to shred almost anything with a hint of private or personal information. Not much paper goes in the garbage unless it is micro-shredded. I highly recommend this shredder, especially considering the very reasonable price.

I had been using the same Fellowes shredder for over 10 years. Was hesitant to replace because it still worked, feel this it has been a high quality shredder. BUT, I am very happy I upgraded. This shredder improved my experience in these ways. 1.MUCH easier to unload, with no more vacuuming necessary. My old shredder required you to take the entire top (heaviest part) off and then dump the bin underneath. There was no way to do this without a mess being left by all the little pieces stuck to the bottom of the shredding device. This style is so much easier with a simple pull out bin. I just filled it twice my first time using it and I didn't have a single piece fall onto the floor. That alone is worth the update. 2. Larger bin by 1.5 gallons, so less frequent emptying. 3. MUCH quieter. I guess I assumed shredders were just naturally quite loud, but this one is significantly quieter. 4. It can truly handle 12 pages at a time, old one could barely do 9, although rated for 11. 5. Shreds into much smaller pieces instead of strips. 6. Has casters, making it easier to roll to another room if necessary. CON: The only reason I couldn't give it 5 stars is that the bin does not go back in smoothly. It's not a huge deal ,but you do need to jiggle and push it a bit to go back in. It pulls out without issue. I would still buy again despite this issue.

This is a great shredder for home use. I've had this for a few years now and use it to shred old important papers, taxes, etc. ... Does a great job for home use.

The Amazon Basics 12 Sht. Micro Cut Shredder is an excellent shredder. The casters gently push in and roll smooth with the 21.6 lb. weight. The Caster locks require just a finger to operate and lock with tooth engagement not clamping pressure. The shredder is easy to use, didn't jam or overheat. I shredded 30 years of utility, checking and other documents in 2 days. I emptied the bin 15 times into three 30 gal. bags. The micro-cut pieces flow like a fluid when emptying, so some precaution is required, no fans, no sneezing. If you don't watch these can get everywhere. The bin takes a little jostling to put back in as there are locating hooks on the bin bottom that need to engage. I found the Shredder quiet, but the shredding sound is unique and can be heard. The 12 sheet capacity saved me a lot of time. Thanks. DMWorrel

I ordered this for Prime Day, in hopes of replacing my now nearly-10-year-old previous Amazon Basics 12-sheet shredder. That much-loved shredder has been AMAZING -- but sadly, it has recently developed some kind of sensor problem that causes the motor not to stop running when I shred something, until I actively shut the unit off. Still, the quality and longevity of that shredder has been beyond amazing. So when Prime Day 2024 rolled around, I thought, what a great opportunity to replace it! First, the good stuff. The new shredder is the same robust build quality as my previous one. The only change I immediately noticed was that it is slightly shorter and wider, and that I was expected to install the coaster wheels myself (these had come preinstalled on my old shredder). No biggie! Disappointingly, though, Amazon has made two changes to the model in the intervening years that I am finding really difficult/annoying to work with, and which I expect will force me to return it. Specifically, it has narrowed the width of the paper feed/opening from a generous 10 inches to a very narrow 8.5 inches. The wider space of this opening on the old shredder made it an easy dream to feed in pages from any angle. The very tight opening on the new shredder means paper has to be very carefully stacked and fed in at a single, very precise angle. I am finding that having to line the pages up so carefully is adding hugely to the time it takes me to work through the build-up of paper in my "shred box." In addition, the pages sometimes get hung up on something as I'm trying to feed them in. Another -- less irritating but also annoying -- change is that the shredder is no longer always "auto on" upon page-feeding. This is due to a timed auto-shut-off "feature." Whereas with the old model, I could feed into it at any time and rely on it springing into instant action, with the new model, if I've let it sit too long (and I'm not sure as I write this what "too long" is, exactly), the whole unit has to be actively switched on again before it will work. Fortunately for me, I forgot that back when I first fell in love with my original Amazon Basics 12-sheet shredder, I was so impressed by it that I bought a backup. I'd forgotten this, but while I was complaining to my husband about the new shredder issues, he crinkled his eyebrows and said, "Didn't you buy a backup shredder way back when?" I can't believe I forgot that. Found it sitting, unopened, downstairs in storage, and did an absolute happy dance. Now, I'm just hoping I'll get another 10 years out of that one, and that when I next need to replace it, Amazon will have at least readjusted the paper opening to be wider than the bare minimum.

Was looking for a shredder to produce cardboard bedding material for my worm composting set-up. I have a nice cross-cut shredder but A: only 10 sheet maximum and B: cross-cut still produces pieces that are not ideal length. This shredder has lots of recommendations from folks who want to make their own simple bedding for their “worm tower” set-ups. So I decided to give it a go. A 12-sheet shredder is considered the minimum page count to be able to handle standard cardboard. My 10 sheet machine could do it, but was grinding hard! It's a good shredder otherwise, so didn’t want to kill it. And I have an old workhorse strip shredder that can basically shred concrete, but again, pieces are much too long for my needs. Does a very nice job on standard cardboard (read amazon boxes) producing small, easy to store and spread pieces. Not a speed demon, but not bogging down either. Very pleased. Also a great way to handle your paper or cardboard for recycling or other composting (not just vermiculture).

Really powerful shredder. Can run for long time without overheating and lets me shred a lot of papers accumulated over time. So far no single issue.
