I think you dropped thew decimal point. I have three of them, and they all weigh 1120 grams (2.496lb or 2lb 7.5 oz) with the rubber feet.

Can this replace an 8000 grit water stone for use in woodworking - plane irons, specifically?

It should. Personally, I use a coarse DMT diamond stone to remove edge nicks quickly (I also use the diamond stone for flattening my other stones). I then use Shapton stones up to 12000 grit to get my edges perfect. I have a traditional water stone for my kitchen knives (1000/6000 grit) by King.

I see "8000" cited: is this the same as the 400-800-1200 grit series?

Each level of grit has its own mesh number or micron equivalent. 8000 mesh is Extra Extra Fine, or 3 microns.
