Carousel may have been one of Rodgers & Hammerstein's least popular shows at the time, but it's now considered one of the duo's most compelling offerings, and there are plenty of good recordings to choose from. Nicholas Hytner's much-praised production originated in London (with a cast album available on RCA/Victor) before successfully opening at Lincoln Center in New York. The CD's nicely illustrated booklet gives a fair idea of Bob Crowley's spectacular sets and costumes, which went a long way in helping Hytner reinvent the show (he got rid of "The Highest Judge of All," for instance). The American cast (only Michael Hayden's Billy Bigelow appeared in both cities) is as good as it gets, with special kudos going to Audra McDonald and her heavenly "Mister Snow." Having never seen "Carouse" live or on DVD, I didn't know what to expect. In fact this production contains fantastic songs and emotion. Audra Mcdonald is one of the best singers I have ever heard. I recently attended a local amateur production of Carousel which was so disappointing after listening to this CD.

Interesting retake on a classic.
While initially hard to reconcile the original Broadway voices with this remounting, it has grown on me over time. The most significant differences were Michael Hayden's Billy who doesn't have the 'manly' bluff of then original but has something else instead as well as Audra MacDonald's Carrie, who's voice can get quite dramatic and dark, quite unlike the more traditional soubrette of the 1940's.

Love this CD!
Great rendition of Carousel! Love it! Recording is crisp and clear and it is enjoyable to listen to. I would recommend.

Although I go around mangling various songs from this show, ultimately I forget how incredible good a show it is. This album is a great reminder.

Ding Dong clear as a bell.
At last a CD with beautiful singing and perfect diction. It really is a pleasure to listen to such clear music and be able to understand every word. I would highly recommend this CD if you like musicals.

My favourite cast recording of this show
My favourite cast recording of this show! It is truly unique with its fresh and clear interpretations of the songs that, in many cases, abandon the typical classical sound. Though it is now 21 years old, it still sounds contemporary. Highly recommended for any Carousel, Rodgers & Hammerstein and/or, musical theatre fan.

Carousel's sea change works wonders
What a sea change occurred betwixt this National Theatre production from London to New York .I did not care for Nick Hytner's take on the show but here we are discussing the musical aspect and here Billy Bigelow's voice has improved beyond measure, displaying a maturity and power that was not evident in London .The female leads also sound vast improvements on their National counterparts and the overall aural sound of the show is superb .Altogether a must for Carousel admirers .
