The description states this is an alcove tub, but it looks like a freestanding tub. Can it be installed freestanding?

No. The back side of the tub is open. Must be put up flush to wall.

After install, how can i access the pump for maintenance?

My installer made a accessible area in the next room and covered the area with plastic cover that can be opened and closed.
