Mercer Publishing has the only available practice materials in the format of the CogAT* exam. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Most of the questions in this book are at the 2nd to 3rd grade level of difficulty. Please see our grade-specific books for additional grade options. The Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT*), published by Riverside Publishing, Multilevel Edition tests are commonly given to 3rd grade students and above (and sometimes students in 2nd grade), although it depends on what test your school/program provides and the test level that they use for your grade level. The A - H level tests expect that the child is able to read and answer the test questions themselves. This practice test contains nine subtests in the three test areas found on the CogAT: VERBAL Verbal Classification 20 questions Sentence Completion 20 questions Verbal Analogies 25 questions QUANTITATIVE Quantitative Relations 25 questions Number Series 20 Review: A Great way to prep for the CogAT - I purchased this to help prepare my son for Gifted testing in the 2nd grade. We went through the tests together; I read the directions and explained it in kids language and then explained the first problem, and then he went from there on his own. He came home after the testing and thanked me because he said the real test was just the same and he felt a lot less stress then the other kids in the test did because he knew what to expect and could concentrate on the task instead of trying to understand the point of each section while sitting in the exam. Bottom line is that thanks to this book, I feel that it is much more likely that my son's scores will reflect his true abilities (whatever they may be!) vs. what the scores would be if we didn't use this book. An especially valuable part of the book was the section on suggestions/strategies on how to approach standardized testing and this type of testing in specific - starting on page 1. For those negative comments from others about being disappointed in this book, I offer that the object of this book is probably not what you were looking for. The book itself states that: "The object of this pracice test is to familiarize your child with the types of questions they will face on test day, how the tests are formatted, the symbols used and the number of questions in each test area." In meeting those objects, I gave the book 5 stars. Review: Not worth it - I decided to return right at the moment I got it from the seller. Just one hundred questions for 40 bucks, it does not worth that. Make sure to read their reviews if you want to go with Mercer publishing, terrible customer service. Most of these questions could be found similar in [...], select bundle Cognitive Abilities Test(tm) (CogAT®) Prep Bundles , it is over 100 bucks. If your budget is limited, go for http://www.desertcart.com/gp/product/1601441495/ref=oh_details_o02_s00_i00 It is much cheaper with a lot more execises. Some gift program teachers provide similar excises, they provide evaluation to the students, set a timer say 1.5 hours to complete all the questions. That way it gives the similar situation with a real exam. The expense is 60 bucks covering a 1.5 hour evaluation and a session to explain the answers.

Useful preparation for the Cogat
All of my children have used this book to prepare for their Cogat exams, and found that the information presented was very similar to that in the real exam. The practice using this book was absolutely critical into their getting into the Gifted and Talented program at school. Yes, the book is relatively expensive, particularly considering that only one exam is included and that there is no explanation of answers. That being said, I do recommend this book, as it is a one-time purchase, and a valuable investment in your child’s education.

A good start
This book is a good starting point to prepare for the Cogat tests. It gives an idea of what to expect. However, the number of practice questions are not sufficient enough, parents would have to create more questions using the framework provided.

Exactly like the CogAT
My son tried the tests in this book to prepare for the CogAT at school. He said the test at school was exactly the same. The book is just a sample test from each of the sections of the CogAT to give the kids a feel for what to expect. If you are looking a study book, it won't help, because there is not enough work here to drill with; but if you just want to relax your child so he knows what to expect, this will do it. ________________________________ UPDATE: I've been told the CogAT test format has been changed. My daughter will be taking the test this year, so we'll see how it goes.
