I've been using this book for a week and already find the layout and structure superior to others I've used. After trying many other self-teaching books/methods I've always found that the bulk of learning focuses around language useful to a short stay tourist, rather than learning the core of the language in order to become familiar with any scenario. Bregsteins book however, builds solid foundations and allows the user to become confident in structure of the sentence. I've used this book to effectively start from scratch and although it begins with a simple alphabet, I found the explanation of phonetic sounds and basic rules more digestible than other books. As a novice, I wish I had started with this book; its clear, structured and the exercises throughout help to solidify what has been learned. For optimum learning, do as advised and dont skip ahead. Good luck in your studies.

This is a really solid Spanish learning book and has helped me make steady progress. The lessons are structured so that you can comfortably work through about one unit a week and keep a steady pace, which makes it feel manageable rather than overwhelming. There’s lots of vocabulary included, but it’s presented in a way that feels clear and useful instead of just dumping a huge list on you. The grammar explanations are very clear and easy to follow, which is great for building confidence. There are also plenty of practice exercises to reinforce what you’ve learned. I also like that there’s an app component — it’s especially helpful for learning pronunciation and hearing the language spoken. Overall a great resource for anyone serious about learning Spanish.

really good and concise book for independent study alongside your classes. good explanations of grammar. lots of examples of language patterns. Has an answers index for all the exercises. There are also sound files available for listening practice. Happy i bought it.

Generally a good Spanish book with lots of information and explanations. However there are some errors in the book and weird use of language that have been pointed out to me by Spanish speakers, which is a bit disheartening. For example, they call a toe tobillo (ankle) in one chapter, and odd phrases like "Donde tiene lugar la fiesta" instead of donde esta la Fiesta"

I like this book. You have to work through it step by step without jumping to the next part but it explains things really well.

One of the best courses I have found. It combines grammatical concepts with loads of exercises and examples and vocabulary. There is also an app to help with pronunciation and comprehension.It's a hefty volume of 600 pages and thirty chapters. Hoping to cover a chapter a week. Very detailed and comprehensive.I just have a basic knowledge of some verbs and tenses and an interest in languages. As a complete beginner it would be useful to supplement this with some basic Youtube videos and keep coming back to it to get an in-depth understanding.

Have not gone through whole book but think it is excellent. More than 600 pages well worth the money. Think if you follow exercises and supplement with speaking you will understand basic Spanish

This is a brilliant book. I think most people know that trying to learn a new language by yourself can be a struggle. You have to find the right combination of something to keep you engaged, something that explains grammar easily, and something that lets you hear native speakers, and something that helps you test yourself and see your progress. I stumbled on this book after trying various other books, and using this, with a combination of Michel Thomas CDs (great for in the car) and Loecsen (good for simple vocab learning), I can finally see some progress. The book explains the various verbs, sentence structure, how adjectives are used etc, which then makes understanding and therefore using the other two formats easier. This is of course just my method, but I definitely recommend the book for the explanations and exercises, and the associated McGraw Hill website that accompanies the book. I find it a very good system.

I wasted so much time on Duolingo! I was dedicated to putting in the consistent work and time to learn Spanish but six months into my streak I didn't feel like I was making any progress in learning the language. I found this book from researching online about what options are recommended and I am very happy that this is the book I chose. I've just started chapter 8 and I feel like I really am learning. Hot tip: use this book alongside the Language Transfer audio lessons that are available for free online (just search Language Transfer Spanish and you'll find it) if you really want to learn quickly! They are both very helpful resources that I seriously recommend.

This book it's very helpful and also thick book good forthe beginners to study Spanish language.

Love it! Simple to start, plenty of written exercises to work on. Tackles sentence structures, basic vocab and grammar, pronouns. Very comprehensive and user friendly. I’d recommend having a spanish-English dictionary handy when you study to help translate and understand the chapters as well.
