In the romantic tradition of Dear John , an injured Navy doctor meets two extremely important women whose secrets will change the course of his life in this #1 New York Times bestseller. Trevor Benson never intended to move back to New Bern, North Carolina. But when a mortar blast outside the hospital where he worked sent him home from Afghanistan with devastating injuries, the dilapidated cabin he'd inherited from his grandfather seemed as good a place to regroup as any. Tending to his grandfather's beloved beehives, Trevor isn't prepared to fall in love with a local . . . yet, from their very first encounter, Trevor feels a connection with deputy sheriff Natalie Masterson that he can't ignore. But even as she seems to reciprocate his feelings, she remains frustratingly distant, making Trevor wonder what she's hiding. Further complicating his stay in New Bern is the presence of a sullen teenage girl, Callie, who lives in the trailer park down the road. Trevor hopes Callie can shed light on the mysterious circumstances of his grandfather's death, but she offers few clues--until a crisis triggers a race to uncover the true nature of Callie's past, one more intertwined with the elderly man's passing than Trevor could ever have imagined. In his quest to unravel Natalie and Callie's secrets, Trevor will learn the true meaning of love and forgiveness . . . and that in life, to move forward, we must often return to the place where it all began. Review: Very good - Good Review: Good read - This was a slow burn type of read, though very atmospheric. The characters were interesting, especially Trevor, and Callie's story was intriguing. I liked the beekeeping description and the amateur detective work involved in finding the truth about Callie. This book was described as a heart-wrencher, not sure it was. A good read.

Another wonderful adventure with Nicholas Sparks
The Return had a different tone compared to the rest of his novels. The characters took many chapters to develop and the love story between two of the main characters was a difficult, yet enthralling one. I admit, when I first got the book I read a few pages and put it down, which was a first for me. But once I gave it a second try, I couldn't put it down and finished it in a few days. The story of Callie's character was a complete surprise, and I was completely torn over several chapters. As with all of Nicolas Sparks work, there were moments of joy and laughter, and other parts of the novel brought tears and sadness. I can understand why many are saying they don't like the story, it's not like what he's written before, and it's true. His work in this book is completely different, but if you stick with it and give the characters a chance, you will grow to understand each of them and enjoy the journey as the story progresses. It was a great novel, and I'm happy that I purchased it. Can't wait for the next one N.S.!
