Tungsten Cube - 1.5" - One Kilogram

I bought this as a display piece I will be pairing with an equal sized block of aluminum from the same seller. It arrived yesterday and I am very pleased. It is a beautifully machined and surprisingly heavy block of tungsten.

It's exactly what I wanted, great item.

This cube is awesome! I saw one on Youtube awhile back and just could stop thinking about it. I looked around at some other tungsten options, but most had a bunch of ugly engraving on them along with sharp edges. This cube is impeccably machined. There are 0 visible machining marks, and it has a nice shiny brushed finish. The edges are rounded and the corners, while pointy, are not sharp. It also comes with an acrylic stand that holds the cube at an attractive display angle. On to the coolest part though, the weight. This cube is indeed one kilo. The fact that it's so small makes it seem like it weighs muuuch more. Everyone I've shown it to has been amazed. It sits on my work desk and has become my defacto figet toy during boring phone meetings and whatnot. I felt silly when I first made such a frivilous purchase, but as soon as I picked it up and felt the weight that feeling quickly faded away. If you're looking for a tungsten cube, this is the one! P.S. It's not like tungsten will go obsolete. If you ever need to sell it, it'll likely retain almost all it's value. ;)

Great product everyone should buy if they find metal fascinating I threw the cube up in the air. It fell hit the concrete now the concrete has a hole in it cube unfazed.

Exactly what it says on the label. It's a 1.5" cube of Tungsten alloy. The densest material you will ever hold in your hand unless you routinely handle gold bullion or work in the nuclear industry. (and the stuff in the nuke industry you probably shouldn't be holding in your hand.) Pure Tungsten has a density of 18.3g/cm^3 (18.25 per wikipedia. 18.3 by places that only go to 1 decimal place) The paperwork that came with this says it has a density of 18.02 g/cm^3 Measuring the cube with my admittedly cheap calipers it is spot on 1.5" on a side. Measuring the weight on my digital kitchen scale I get 1005 grams. By my math That comes to 18.2 g/cm^3 So....either my calipers are off, my scale is off, or there is a transposition typo in the paperwork. Whatever. It's a nice toy. Good paper weight and the fact that it's almost identical to the density of Gold makes it a great conversation piece when arguing with your friends about how the bad guys couldn't possibly haul away that much gold in the heist movie of your choice. EDIT: Having played with it for a while I want to note that according to my digital scale it weighs somewhere between 995g and 1005g depending on the time of day, humidity, and how I'm holding my mouth at the moment. So, +/- half a percent on the stated one kilo mass. Not bad. At the low end it comes in right on the money as far as the documented density is concerned. I'm going to see if I can talk the local high school science teacher into letting me use a balance scale to get a more accurate mass. I'll update if I learn anything new.

I bought this 1.5" Tungsten cube from Midwest Tungsten Services (MTS) and the very light 1.5" Magnesium version from Forge Solid (which is about 1/3 lighter than aluminum). I have not seen the equivalent Forge Source Tungsten cube in person - but I think it may be helpful to compare the packaging and finish on each of these (different) cubes. PACKAGING This MTS cube came well packaged in a thick roll of foam with padding on all sides. It was shipped in an otherwise nondescript white shipping box. In the package is also a material certification letter, certifying the makeup of the cube and the back side gives some interesting information about Tungsten. It is on letter sized stationary and was folded in such a way in the box as to not make it something you would really display with the cube. The cube was then inside a sealed plastic bag with the company logo and a printed sticker identifying it. In contrast, the Forge Solid cube came in a nice (small), retail quality box with printed pictures of the cube and a description - though it appears they just put the Magnesium cube in the Tungsten box - as the wording on the box was the sales pitch for the Tungsten not Mg cube. No letter or other documents inside - but definitely would make a nicer "gift" product. Also - this one came with a little plastic stand - which I now use for the MTS cube on my desk. Points Forge Solid. FINISH The MTS cube has a nice brushed finish on all sides. The edges are slightly rounded to avoid any sharp sides/corners. One face of my cube has a circular mark across it - the other sides look perfectly finished. Again in contrast, the Forge Solid Magnesium cube does have sharp edges and corners. It is also, surprising not finished. Looks like a piece of industrial aluminum, cut in the shop and sent straight away. All sides have what look like brush or cut marks, and several sides have small / dark spots. Not at all a nice finish. In fairness this Mg cube is not their main business and from the photos I have seen online of the Tungsten version - I believe it would have a finish comparable to the MTS cube - though it may still have the sharp edges. Points MTS VALUE You can get the Forge Solid Tungsten cube on some flash sale sites for around $240. You can also buy smaller versions, and dent/ding versions directly from their website for some savings. The Mg cube is a lot less at around $45. For that you get a cool paperweight in a nice retail box. At the time of this writing the MTS cube is $133 - more than $100 less than the competition. With the nice finish (minus a blemished side) and rounded edges this is the cube to get. Points MTS FINAL THOUGHTS The actual value for 1kg of Tungsten right now is about $23. The rest is finish and packaging. Ultimately what you are buying is an expensive paper weight. I love it - and am very happy with the MTS cube - but if you are planning on gifting this - you will need to come up with your own creative packaging. I wish MTS also made a cheaper and nicer version of the Mg cube - and a small stand would be a great addition.

Totally worth it as someone who has wanted one for a while now. It's beautiful, satisfying to hold, and the subtle rounded corners are appreciated. Truthfully I've kept it with me all day since I opened it. Highly recommend getting one if you're already interested enough to be reading reviews, and I highly recommend this product specifically if you just want a clean cube without engravings. It also comes with a simple but nice little stand, which while not crucial is nice to have.

Whatever voids I may have in my life, this cube has very convincingly filled one of them.

All the people here who bought this wireless tungsten cube to admire its surreal heft have precisely the wrong mindset. I, in my exalted wisdom and unbridled ambition, bought this cube to become fully accustomed to the intensity of its density, to make its weight bearable and in fact normal to me, so that all the world around me may fade into a fluffy arena of gravitational inconsequence. And it has worked, to profound success. I have carried the tungsten with me, have grown attached to the downward pull of its small form, its desire to be one with the floor. This force has become so normal to me that lifting any other object now feels like lifting cotton candy, or a fluffy pillow. Big burly manly men who pump iron now seem to me as little children who raise mere aluminum. I can hardly remember the days before I became a man of tungsten. How distant those days seem now, how burdened by the apparent heaviness of everyday objects. I laugh at the philistines who still operate in a world devoid of tungsten, their shoulders thin and unempowered by the experience of bearing tungsten. Ha, what fools, blissful in their ignorance, anesthetized by their lack of meaningful struggle, devoid of passion. Nietzsche once said that a man who has a why can bear almost any how. But a man who has a tungsten cube can bear any object less dense, and all this talk of why and how becomes unnecessary. Schopenhauer once said that every man takes the limits of his own field of vision for the limits of the world. Tungsten expands the limits of a man’s field of vision by showing him an example of increased density, in comparison to which the everyday objects to which he was formerly accustomed gain a light and airy quality. Who can lament the tragedy of life, when surrounded by such lightweight objects? Who can cry in a world of styrofoam and cushions? Have you yet understood? This is no ordinary metal. In this metal is the alchemical potential to transform your world, by transforming your expectations. Those who have not yet held the cube in their hands and mouths will not understand, for they still live in a world of normal density, like Plato’s cave dwellers. Those who have opened their mind to the density of tungsten will shift their expectations of weight and density accordingly. To give this cube a rating of anything less than five stars would be to condemn life itself. Who am I, as a mere mortal, to judge the most compact of all affordable materials? No. I say gratefully to whichever grand being may have created this universe: good job on the tungsten. It sure is dense. I sit here with my tungsten cube, transcendent above death itself. For insofar as this tungsten cube will last forever, I am in the presence of immortality.

Do not ponder any longer, my friend. If you have knowledge of this cube's existence, you must own it. You must hold it in your hands, pure tungsten against your flesh, and relish in it's absolute power and weight, all contained to a mere 1.5 inch cube. My journey is complete. I am whole.
