Zippo 12 Hour Refillable Hand Warmer

I’d like to start by saying the warmer itself is literally the most amazing thing ever and I’m obsessed with it. I know a lot of the reviewers have had some issues and I’ve had some as well, but after doing some research on Reddit, I have came across some things I think would be great advice on “hacks” and getting the most out of your hand warmer. First things first, your hand warmer should NEVER catch on fire like I’ve seen some of your reviews do. If it does this, this means you are either over filling your warmer or you still have a decent amount of residual fuel left over from your last use and adding more fuel will cause it to combust. If you’re not sure if your warmer still has fluid, always try lighting it and check for warmth from the burner before adding fuel. Next, you can put your warmer out by removing the burner from the device and placing it on a safe spot, like I use my granite countertop! If you still have fuel left over, you can save it from evaporating by purchasing or cutting a latex tube, bike tube, latex glove, whatever snug tube shaped device to wrap around the hole that you dispense fuel into. This will create an airtight seal and prevent your fuel from evaporating when not in use! The next part is my favorite. So in one of the threads I found on Reddit, someone advised the issue that is the zippo burner itself. You can buy zippo burner replacements in stores or on Amazon for $7 usually. Zippo claims you can get 80 burns before getting a replacement but as many of you already know or are finding out, the thin little strip of catalytic burning platinum starts to loose it’s strength after a couple lights or so. I’ve seen this vary from person to person. I’ve seen people suggest to fluff it up inside, but don’t do that, this can cause the platinum particles to loosen up and dispense around the air you are breathing in and I’m sure that’s not healthy… LOL. The best thing I have seen, that not only saves money and works amazingly, but will last you probably the rest of your life and eliminate the need to buy replacement burners EVER! There is a product on Amazon called “Platinum Bright Embers” and is the same material used in the burners zippo sells. These are used mainly for people who own gas fireplaces and want to create the aesthetic of burning embers falling off the wood in their fireplace. But if you own a zippo hand warmer… you can take your old cr*ppy zippo burner off of your hand warmer, take it outside and use a toothpick, skewer, whatever you can use, to push out the old platinum. Then you open your new bag of platinum bright embers and pull out one of the little swabs and stuff it tightly in place on your old burner, bam, good as new! In fact better than new! If you see in my photos, this thing GLOWS bright as hell only after a few licks from your lighter’s flame! Don’t be alarmed though, once you place the top back on your hand warmer, the holes will cut a lot of the oxygen off and it will not be as bright anymore, and then obviously I really recommend you place your hand warmer in the fabric bag it comes with, because your hand warmer is gonna get HOT. I also forgot to mention, the embers are on sale on Amazon for like $25-30 depending on who you buy it from, but all you have to do is search Platinum Bright Embers. This has been the best discovery for my hand warmer and it’s been keeping my cold *ss warm so far! Typically, I do not fill my tank to the 12 hour mark, I usually only fill it halfway and because of this and keeping it in the bag and the strong thick layer of platinum I put in the burner, my hand warmer has been lasting way over 12 hours with only half the tank filled. Sometimes I get 20 hours and I’m honestly surprised! Lastly, you can attach a lanyard to your hand Warner bag and wear it to warm your torso up, in doing this, your torso will help warm up your limbs. I really really hope this helps anyone! Best decision I’ve made!

ive tested mine for about a week now and it does the job very well. it doesn’t get too hot where you can’t touch it, but it stays a consistent temperature throughout the day (~110° F which is plenty). i don’t really like the catalyst pads in the new ones, but you can easily modify them with “Platinum Bright Embers” for fireplaces in place of the catalyst pads and it will work a LOT better (~125-135° F). i don’t really notice a smell with it. you can smell a hint the lighter fluid if your nose is up against it, but i doubt you would do that for many reasons LOL. it’s very sturdy and does exactly what it’s supposed to do. lasts for over 12 hours. fits in a pocket very nicely and stays warm. these aren’t supposed to have a visible flame. more like a very dim “ember” (shown in the second photo) that you can’t see during the day. just don’t overfill the hand warmer or it might produce a visible flame which you don’t want. if it does, just wait for a bit of the fluid to evaporate then try again. it’s a great older style hand warmer that lasts a lot longer than the electric ones on the market. update: i used platinum bright embers on top of the old catalyst pad and it seems to burn a lot hotter and more consistent. when it’s in the bag it’s really nice but be careful the metal gets pretty hot. i got mine to run for 18 hours on one fill up and it seems to smell a lot less as well. look up a youtube video on how to modify zippo hand warmer i 100% recommend you do that! update #2: i bought the polished chrome one and it burns a LOT hotter than the modified black one some how. i haven’t tried changing the catalyst, but i don’t think i’ll need to. just purchase the chrome one or the 6 hour version if you want tons of heat.

Zippo makes a great pocket warmer. I use this during hunting season one in each of my coat pockets. Key things to know it can last up to 12Hr. I normally only use the 8 hr fill mark. The odor from the fuel is very low depending on your fuel type. This is a slow smolder not an open flame so it heats up slowly but can still burn you. So plan accordingly I don’t recommend using it in mesh pockets or jackets with synthetic fiber.

**UPDATE JAN. 29. 16** HUGE update here! If you've tried everything, and it's still not getting hot, pop off the catalytic burner. Are the two contact point really dark? If so, take a needle/safety pin and GENTLY poke around within the two contact areas. It will help create a better contact point for the burner! **UPDATE JAN. 25. 16** It is advertised to last up to 80 lights before replacing the burner on top. Here is to the 80th "advertised" light up! The catalyst burner is still going strong! No need to replace after relighting 80 times. At least for me! It gets warmer than ever!** **UPDATE JAN.05.16**: I can CONFIRM the chrome heats faster and is overall more efficient because of the reflective surface.** **The chrome finish is a fingerprint magnet (see pictures)** PRO TIP: To check if you have the 2015 model, Just take off the burner and see that the middle hole is empty and is used to fill with the included nozzle (lifesaver!). The older models had cotton throughout making it a hassle to fill and easy to spill. (hey that rhymes!) PRO TIP: If you're lid seems to be loose, simply give it a squeeze! and it will fit like O.J. Simpsons gloves should have! (Same with the catalytic burner, just give it a squeeze if you think its too loose!) PRO TIP: It won't seem to be getting hot at first. FILL IT FULLY THE FIRST TIME, and after the first 5-10 hours of using the catalytic burner, it will get hotter, within 20 hours or so it should be at its full potential. So don't get discouraged ;) PRO TIP: you can use the handwarmer without the pouch the first time, and it will prime much faster! PRO TIP: Use Ronsonol (See pics*. And probably any naphtha fuel will do) brand lighter fluid (it comes in a yellow bottle) to save $$. Noticed ZERO changes in the performance/smell. So this thing is really cool. It WILL last for at LEAST 12 hours given, you fill up the fill-container to the 12 hour mark and you use the provided pouch to regulate oxygen. Now, it CAN last longer. It all depends on how much oxygen it is exposed to = burn hotter(more oxygen, lower heat times)/cooler(less oxygen, more sustained heat times) SOME BASIC TESTS I CONDUCTED -I kept it inside the included pouch, inside my pocket, and it lasted for 15 hours. (not very warm) -I put it in the pouch itself outside, it lasted around 12 hours (same thing without pouch, in pocket) (nice, cozy warmth) -by itself outside, it will last 7-10ish hours maybe more maybe less its hard to tell (HOT) YOU CAN PUT IT OUT. As mentioned, oxygen is what makes this thing go, so putting it in the pouch, and putting that in a Ziploc bag zipped (or any method to cut off air supply), will extinguish the embers, causing it to go out. And you can re light it! Please note: the fluid WILL eventually evaporate so use it soon or refill! SMELL There is a slight smell which is inevitable in these devices. It can get irritating sometimes. You won't notice it 87.99999% of the times p: ONLY REPLACEMENTS YOU NEED TO WORRY ABOUT! The only thing necessary to replace would be the burner on the top. It is about $6 (a bit steep in my opinion almost half the price of the device itself) but still cheaper in the long run over disposables. The catalytic burner has tiiiny pieces of PLATINUM (yes the rare earth element!) and it really does last long. Much longer than advertised.. They advertise 70-80 times but the older models catalyst burner lasted at least 100 times without a doubt. I used it the entire year cause it was a really bad winter. The only negative thing i can possibly think of is the color. I got the "Blaze Orange" and the inside kind of looks like spray paint. I don't see the finish lasting very long. And if the paint chips, I don't know if I'd feel safe using it with 350F of heat (110F with pouch). I would opt for the chrome or the black. PRO TIP: someone here asked as to why it takes longer to heat up than reviews stated. I believe the chrome one is reflective so it heats up faster! SO GET THE CHROME COLOR! I ONLY GOT ORANGE BECAUSE MY GF LIKES IT. lol. I take a lot of time with these passionate reviews,[...] Thank you for reading :D !

Had a couple of these years ago and loved them. Working outside in the winter, these are very versatile. First, construction. Very well made. Some people say the covers are too loose, but easy fix is to take the cover off and squeeze it a bit, it will fit snugly after that. Very solid feeling in the hand, nicely put together. The new version has a hole for filling in the center of the wick. Much more convenient to fill, the old style the wick would fill up quickly near the top and spill out - new version you can fill as quick as you can pour it. The newer design little cup is much better as well - nozzle is a better size and the angle for filling is better. Works very well. The first time you want to "burn it in". Fill it completely (12hr mark) and let it go. Allowing it to breathe by sitting it down on the bag on a table will cause it to get very hot quickly. It will not last 12hrs with that much oxygen getting to it, but it will settle in quicker. Subsequent uses can be used in the bag as described in the manual. I use it for different uses - in the pockets it obviously does a great job keeping your hands warm if you put them in your pocket. But you can do other things with it - for example, I find that tucking it inside my motorcycle gloves during cold weather rides provides a great way to keep your hands warm when riding. Alternatively, you can put them inside your coat to keep your core warmer during cold temps outside. A jacket with double breast pockets inside works great. I highly recommend these if you spend a lot of time outside during the winter months - for either work or recreation, they are simply too handy to mention all the uses.

So far so good! I've only lit it once thus far but it did what it was supposed to do despite my skepticism. I followed the directions exactly, touched a flame to it for ten seconds and put the lid on, put it in its bag, and put it in my pocket. For the first hour or two it was pretty tame so I took it out of my pocket and out of the bag and held it for maybe a half hour or so and it started to get uncomfortable to hold on to because it was getting so hot (that's a good thing). So I put it back in the bag and back in my pocket where it stayed good and hot for the remaining hours until the fluid inside was empty. I also tried it in my jeans pocket without the bag. It was nice and hot that way but the drawback is that once it's in there sans bag it's a little hot to just reach in and take out with your bare hands. I mean, I did just that without burning myself but I wouldn't recommend it just incase your's gets hotter than mine did. Just saying, it worked for me without incident. Yes, you can smell it if you're indoors or if it's in your shirt pocket but the smell isn't strong nor is it unpleasant and it isn't going to kill you unless you're like locked in a box or something (small inclosed deer stand? I don't know, maybe if you burned it all day and night and there was zero circulation...) My wife didn't notice the smell and I sat by her all evening with it (burning?) in my pocket. I bought it to use in my inside jacket pocket when I'm outside in the winter to help keep my core temp up, and thus my hands warmer through warmer blood flow. A lot of people don't realize that if your hands are cold in the winter even with gloves on it's actually because your core is cold so it's restricting the flow of warm blood to your hands and feet. I may buy another as two will obviously work better than one in our cold Minnesota winters. I'll update if it needs down grading, otherwise consider this an excellent buy for mostly outside use.

So it’s always tough for me to shop for anything heat related living in one of the coldest states in the country. I always try to look for reviews from other cold states as frequently I’ll be reading a review and they will mention that it’s good for cold nights in Texas. Sorry but that doesn’t help us Minnesotans! So currently it’s -15 below air temperature and -35 with wind chill and this thing is staying warm. I left it outside for about an hour to see if the cold would put it out or frost it up but it stayed warm to the touch and didn’t get cold to the touch which was impressive. Brought it back inside and it warmed up again within minutes. I can’t say it gets really hot when it’s inside the pouch because the pouch insulated the heat a lot but if you touch the metal directly then it can get pretty hot, especially when it’s outside the pouch and has easy access to oxygen. The problems I’ve noticed is that when I touch the metal to get heat it will cool down fairly quickly then I’d have to wait until it heats up again. Another problem is that this functions by a chemical reaction that requires oxygen for it to work and also gives off carbon monoxide. So I wouldn’t recommend this for staying inside closed pockets or gloves because it needs that access to oxygen and using it inside enclosed areas could also be harmful due to the carbon monoxide. So it needs ventilation in order to function both to get the heat and also for your potential health. Next is the cover that goes over the burner comes off really easily. I feel like it should be more secure but it comes off super easily and could certainly be inconvient during active use or trying to use it upside down. The final problem I’ve noticed is from what I understand it has to remain upright so the lighter fluid won’t leak onto the burner part. I haven’t tried using it upside down however so I can’t confirm that it works or doesn’t. Overall it does what it claims so far but there could be better options out there for you that don’t require the ventilation and can be used a little more actively. It is a good heat source but it doesn’t blow away the other options out there such as the hand warmer pouches or battery powered hand warmers. I would say it can be a lot warmer but it comes with other drawbacks, if all you care about is the heat part then it’s worth a shot. I can't believe I never heard of this before it works and is absolutely awesome. Update: After 2 weeks, I bought my Dad one because he's a welder in Northeastern USA and it gets cold in the winter. After a month of use in this NJ winter, I don't leave home without it, it's the best in the morning when I get into my cold car. I also tend to put it near my lower back when it gets a little achy, although it does get hot and I personally need to make sure my undershirt is between the hand warmer and my skin so it doesn't burn me. It also fits in between the stretch material of my lower back support brace so I get heat and support. My back tends to knot up from tension that I create on my muscles when I get cold chills/drafts since I'm a very thin person and tend to always be cold, I tend to shiver easily, and its annoying. This warmer has added an extra layer of constant heat production and it works for me. I swear I've been showing it off since I bought it to everyone. I fill it every morning before I leave the house takes less then a minute to fill and if you want to really be stickler for rules it takes 2-3 minutes to properly prepare it based on instructions, but honestly extra time only comes into play if you overfill or spill, if not less then a minute and your on your way. There is no active/visible flame instead picture a metal case with a Burning Unit which is a coal like cotton fabric that absorbs fluid and slowly smolders in the center of the metal case, fluid at bottom half and oxygen/ventilation holes at top half. The fluid lasts longer then it suppose to based on the included plastic filling canteen's markings, I put 6 hours in I get 8-9 hours of use. Also 6 hours of fluid is not a lot of fluid in my opinion, it's been 3 weeks of constant use and I have not put as major of a dent on my 12oz. Zippo Lighter Fluid as I expected it would use. Once it's on you can't really turn it off based on instructions but if you (1) carefully protect your fingers from burning by using a cloth or something throughout this whole process (I take no responsibility for burnt hands) , you can (2) remove the top cover which unveils the burning unit, (3) then with same protective cloth remove the Burning Unit, (4) "let the fluid base sit upright" for a couple minutes and it will cool down because the burning unit cannot collect anymore fuel, (5) place the burning unit on a non flammable surface till it cools down also. And boom it is off before it has wasted all its fuel. It's not difficult or in my opinion dangerous but DISCLAIMER I only do this if its truly necessary to turn it off, I have a safe place to do it, and the time to wait and supervise while the cooling happens (Usually 5 minutes). I repeat I take no responsibility for burnt hands or anything else burning. I love this Hand Warmer

I wanted a hand warmer that would heat up my fingers, especially after tying laces on ice skates in -10 C and similar. The ZIppo handwarmer, while it works as it is designed to, is more or less incapable of generating enough heat to heat up my hands. If you have cold hands and touch the running zippo, it goes cold - that is how little heat it produces. At home, it might feel warm to the touch if touched briefly, but that is because heat is stored in the heated metal. With cold fingers, that heat is drained in about 2 seconds and then the actual, stead-state heat output is very small. It works best for keeping your hands warm, not for heating up. And in below freezing it likely would not keep you warm unless you stick your hands with the zippo in a pocket or a glove. I got the Ocoopa instead which actually is able to heat up frozen fingers - it feels like the Ocoopa has about 4 times the heat output in Watts (very from the hip here, but gives you a sense of how inferior the Zippo is).

Great little hand warmer. I bought it for my 89 year old father, it was too much for him to cope with as you have to fill it with lighter fuel and keep it upright, but my 18year old son loves it and will use it in the winter.
