Director and star Kenneth Branagh brings another Shakespearean adaptation to the screen. Hamlet (Branagh), Prince of Denmark, vows revenge when informed by the ghost of his murdered father (Brian Blessed) that the present king Claudius (Derek Jacobi) was responsible. Spurning the romantic advances of his sweetheart Ophelia (Kate Winslet), Hamlet attempts to open the eyes of his mother Gertrude (Julie Christie), whom Claudius has now wed. However, Hamlet's procrastination when it comes to killing Claudius costs more lives. Review: To be sane, or not to be sane - Anyone interested in madness/sanity should find this interpretation of Hamlet extremely fascinating. Over and over again, I've found myself deceived by Shakespeare's witty dialogue and Branagh's convincing acting. The main question here is not whether to be or not to be, it is rather "is there a clear line between sanity and insanity, and if so, who decides what madness really is?" Is Hamlet using insanity only to expose the true nature of his uncle Claudius and the Danish court, or does it work as an escape route for him in a time when everything seems crazy and almost everyone betrays him? Review: Hamlet--virtually uncut. This is the DVD to own of this masterpiece. - And not only is it uncut--but it's gripping from start to finish. The cast is a Who's Who of contemporary actors: Kenneth Branagh, Julie Christie, Charlton Heston, Billy Crystal, and more. Find Shakespeare hard to understand? This movie rolls on like a murder mystery.

Not made for U.S. DVD-players
This DVD will not play in my DVD player. Apparently it is not the correct region. Nothing in the product's description indicates that it is a region other than what will play in the United States. Only when a person opens the case would he see markings in a different language. Nothing on the outside of the case--and pictured on Amazon--is in a language other than English, so why would a buyer assume it would not play in a typical DVD player? I see other reviews--NOW--that indicate this, but I was in a hurry at the time I purchased it and, frankly, did not see much reason in reading reviews for a movie I've seen a hundred times (I teach the play in high school English courses). That's my fault; nevertheless, I feel the seller should clearly indicate this issue in the product's description. Now I don't know if I'll get another (correct) DVD, since I already opened it. Very disappointing. Update, a few days later: The seller reached out to me and said this was an Amazon issue. They refunded me for my purchase, so I'm changing my initial 1-star review to 3 stars: although I am not going to get the DVD I ordered, the seller did the best they could to make the situation right.

THIS MOVIE WILL NOT PLAY IN MACHINES RESTRICTED TO REGION 1 (THE US & CANADA)
This DVD will not play in the US. There is no indication in the description, but there is a sticker on the package. Seems like it would be less costly to put a few words in the description instead of printing up stickers for the package, but maybe that would hurt sales numbers. I wanted to replace my original copy of this excellent movie because it is having trouble playing after all these years, but now I don't trust that I will get a version that will play in Region 1. In addition the seller adds insult to injury when the wording on the wrapper makes it seem like it is the *buyer's fault* that they bought this DVD by mistake or not paying attention. I am willing to accept it as my fault if there is any indication that the disc will not play in Region A/1, but there is NONE, including on the DVD case! The only way a buyer would know it won't play in Region 1 is to open the package to find that on the disc it indicates the region. Then, of course it cannot be returned. So at least the seller did that, which is why I give it one star instead of a negative rating, if such a thing could be done. Feh!

strange
came quick. good quality. when I play it on the computer it makes me change the settings to another country. It won't play USA compatible. I had to set it to UK. other than that (which is annoying) it is as expected. Haven't tried it on my dvd player yet. hope it works.

Area 2 DVD
This DVD is designed for Area 2. It will NOT play on many DVD players in the United States. Fortunately, my DVD player will play it. Amazon should require that all DVD listings be plainly labeled as to area. I am sure that many people are disappointed because of this lapse.

I needed this for an English report and it was just an absolutely frustrating disappointment. Make sure to read the fine details
The disc doesn't even play on any device i own, i tried getting it to play on my laptop, dvd player, play station and the version or code or whatever it is just isn't compatible with any device i tried it on. I needed this for an English report and it was just an absolutely frustrating disappointment. Make sure to read the fine details whenever purchasing and save yourself some money and stress...

Empfehle die 2 Disc Special Edition wegen: Erstklassigem Line-Up an Schauspieler.
