In most major universities one of the three or four basic first-year graduate mathematics courses is algebraic topology. This introductory text is suitable for use in a course on the subject or for self-study, featuring broad coverage and a readable exposition, with many examples and exercises. The four main chapters present the basics: fundamental group and covering spaces, homology and cohomology, higher homotopy groups, and homotopy theory generally. The author emphasizes the geometric aspects of the subject, which helps students gain intuition. A unique feature is the inclusion of many optional topics not usually part of a first course due to time constraints: Bockstein and transfer homomorphisms, direct and inverse limits, H-spaces and Hopf algebras, the Brown representability theorem, the James reduced product, the Dold-Thom theorem, and Steenrod squares and powers. Review: Great Book for Beginners - I received a nice copy from desertcart, delivery was quick. Coming to the book, this is great starting point for Algebraic Topology if you know Point set Topology ( because he assumes that the reader knows Quotient Topology). Also, the book is legally available ( on his website). Before introducing a concept, he will motivate it by proper examples and proves theorems after stating some interesting consequences hence great for self study. Some people may not be happy some of the proofs but that's a negligible issue. There are great number of exercises at the end of each section. As he explains in the preface, it would be pity if we miss the geometric intuition of the subject ( and it IS geometric), hence there are lots of diagrams in the book, which is a plus point. Enjoy reading it! Review: Best Book for Algebraic Topology - Initially, I thought that this book condition may not be good but after getting this I was surprised. I didn't find any scratch mark or anything else. Just some stamps are there but that is fine. I got this book in just Rs 395.

Quality of print
Only problem I have is the quality and font used for printing.. Everything else matches the online edition of the book which is free...1500 bucks for this quality of printing , the publisher could do better

Great book
This is the printed version of the freely available pdf, and is ideal for those of us who like physical books to read. Hatcher writes clearly, and gets a lot done in a short amount of text by keeping to the point and not cluttering the narrative with unnecessary detail where it's not needed. I wish there were solutions to the exercises, though.

A fundamental book for algebraic topology
This is a must-have for the ones approaching Algebraic Topology. It is full of examples and counterexamples, and present the arguments in a geometry-flavoured way, with a very natural order. Really recommended.

Excellent
