Looking for a battery recharger for the small 12 volt in Prius 2011. Will this work-- or is it overkill?

I can recommend this battery charger. The reason is that performance and usability are very good. I think it is a good choice to use even if you buy a large car.

Alternator test work on motorcycles too?

Yes ... make sure the battery is fully charged so you won't get a false result. Switch the MODE button to alternator >> start the engine and hold it at 2000 rpm >> if it is charging less than 13.3V it will light up (BAD) >> 13.3V-14.0V (FAIR) >> and above 14.0V (OK).

What is the difference of this one from model 56-864? They seem identical

model #56-864 doesn't check your Alternator to see if it is charging u battery

Is this unit also good for trickle charge?

The product description and other web references say it will work as a trickle charger. In fact the unit goes into a trickle charge mode after it cycles through the battery tests and reconditioning steps. I have used it as a trickle charger for days in a row on a car that gets little use. So far I am satisfied with the product.
