An affordable upgrade worth exploring
This will be a slightly lengthy review given that audio is highly subjective and I WAS the "average Joe" (very sporadically), an audio listener to music on any platforms (also in the absence of music production, sampling, or benchmarking) via 5.1 Creative Inspire T6300 speakers. Firstly, I felt the aesthetics would be excellent in a new transparent computer case (as per photos). However, this was a secondary reason for the acquisition. The design looks very professional, and ergonomically, it felt like a quality upgrade. I also previously had a PCI Sound Blaster Audigy Platinum EX (SB0090), technology dating back to before 2000 (when sound cards produced pitch-perfect instrumental translations of MIDI files and were a must have for an enhanced DOS gaming experience). However, this card was no longer logistical on a new PC given the lack of directly inserting PCI expansion card into new motherboards. So I had taken a calculated risk on this high fidelity audio component, when there is considerable debate as to whether onboard audio outperforms an expansion (slot in) card at all. In absence of drawing comparisons to other vendors, my impartial observations are below. NOTE: I have not utilised the Headphone bi-amp since I have historically preferred audio delivered via desktop speakers: 1) I have utilised this soundcard for nearly 2 months. My initial mindset was to return the item after 1-2 weeks. I previously enjoyed relatively more low frequency, "bass" components in favour of the mid-range aspects. I felt a distinct lack initially. However, this could be related to numerous factors, some of which were beyond my control. I wasn't confident in modifying the equaliser settings in the software since I expected a "one-size fits all" for an audio card in respect to my intended usage. Hence, I continued to use the product for longer to formulate a better opinion (given all permutations), while practically all settings in the SoundBlaster command software were set to close to factory defaults. 2) At a given volume level with the Creative SoundBlaster AE-7, I had to adjust the onboard sound volume bar setting to approximately 2-3 fold in Windows settings. I found a similar trend when I had the previous generation of Creative card with better ratio audio output than the onboard. 3) I purchased a i9 PC just 1-2 weeks prior, predominantly for gaming (prior to purchasing the audio card). No conducted research factually led me to believe an audio card is superior. 4) I am now thoroughly enjoying music harmonics via YouTube surfing, maintaining almost a steady 20% in Windows audio settings. I have spent significantly more time listening to music than gaming (on a gaming PC), and I have identified music artists that I thoroughly enjoy (Delta Goodrem and t.A.T.u) through endless streaming, which brings blistering engineered quality (that compliments the music artists "look and feel") into my room. There is no time bias since these several tracks were prominent over 15 years ago. I deduced both artists were instrument rich and utilised subtle "time-space" tempo harmonics releasing a plethora of emotions, and I believe AE-7 is built to handle the dynamics much better than onboard (however compared in limited capacity in practice). I can now readily identify and explore music that appeals to me (irrespective of the above artists), determine when to listen, hear the impact in a timely manner, and understand them more each time I listen repetitively and ENTIRE duration of the track. This has encouraged me to buy music CDs for the first time and also listen to music on a "de-facto" high quality medium. 4) I would encourage anyone who requires pristine audio and appreciates the music artist's intentions (music more than likely produced on cutting edge technology) to reciprocate this range and EXPLORE this journey as an affordable upgrade. I feel immersed, not overwhelmed, and can refrain from navigating to high volume settings uneccessarily (this is potentially an underlying factor), and the audio still propagates outside of my room with the door closed. AE-7 has exceeded my expectations and delivered exactly that; it makes the sound "sound much better" and more captivating. Please accept any inaccuracies in word selections/typos since I am not from an audio background and written an elaborated review respectively, and have tried to formulate a transparent positive experience (without actually completing identical exhaustive testing on both configurations, other vendors or officially benchmarking).

Finally!!!!
Finally better sound then onboard, Been having slight issues with my onboard sound, distortion here and then. So decided to buy a sound card or cards should I say. Brought SBZ and SBXAE5 plus edition, both where nice cards but both were producing some static noises which I'm now sure this was a fault from my side of things and not of any of the 2 cards. I returned both of them and decided to buy this SBAE7 which I'm glad I did. It has a nicer titanium look and an external volume controller and mic which is handy for any desktops. Slightly better sound from both too. In regards to the static noise being produced through my Bose speakers and headphones, this was founded to be caused by both cards being inserted into the PCIE x 16 slot and not PCIE X1 even though PCIE x 16 does work, it was just causing some sort of interferences. I also kept the SBAE7 sound card far away as possible depending on slot availability from the GPU which may of helped, re/searched online to find a solution and reason for the unwanted static noise which I was experiencing and here it was, right underneath my very own eyes. So try this if you're experiencing any anti electrical static noise or distortion at any time. I did also have my GPU vertical mounted which looked very nice but limited most PCIE slots, now back to horizontal so my GPU is in the top slot PCIEx16 with sound card in bottom PCIE x1 slot. No static noise or any distortion etc, just PURE sound. Please if need be do switch off your HD onboard audio sound in bios just to be Crystal and update to the latest drivers, Hope this helps.

A great internal sound card
The other reviews of the AE-7 are quite verbose, so by way of alternative here are the bullet points: - I upgraded from an AE-5. There's a difference in sound quality, but it's not earthshattering - I'm either listening with my Edifier S350DBs via optical, or DT 1990 Pros via the ACM - DAC is an ESS SABRE-class 9018 - Sound Blaster Command software is on point - Unlike the AE-5, this supports DDL, DTS - 7.1 virtualisation with headphones works well; the card is 5.1 with physical speakers - I haven't noticed any issues with EMI, given that this is an internal card This is about my limit when it comes to sound cards vs. external/discreet amps, etc., but highly recommend this card if a PCI card solution is what you're looking for.

no virtual 7.1 on headphone but otherwise simply incredible product
this was a warehouse deal and they way it was shipped, packed and presented, you would not know. mint condition, not a single mark on it and still wrapped in plastic. the card itself is amazingly well presented with the metal fascia, thick cables and a really good solid feel when you plug in the external control module. the external control module as a nice heavy weight to it also which means it does not slide around your desk and as an added bonus it comes with an inbuilt microphone which is very sensitive so i was able to get rid of my previous desk mic. it comes with a comprehensive instruction manual and once the card is in, it's got a nice white light which depending on your taste and setup looks really nice. the software is much improved compared from previous versions with much better including the option for direct sound but it's important to note when direct sound is enabled you cannot have anything other than 2.1 sound. i used the decoder for dolby digital to power dolby speakers via optical, but it's a strange setup - see the pictures. to enable dolby you need to use the soundblaster (non digital/non spdif) as windows output and then enable dolby in the setting of the command software, you would think that the digital output needs to be selected. if you select the digital output it does work but you cannot have a dolby signal and only 2.1 so i presume it's because the sound blaster chip is doing all the processing and simply passing out via optical. i went from a sound blaster z to this and its a big improvement in terms of sound recording and general quality of output. other things to note are that the marketed "virtual 7.1" surround is total rubbish in the sense there's no option for this or way to test it and you certainly can't turn on 7.1 in your windows speakers or anything hence one star off. having had true multi speaker headphones in the past, i can tell you that it doesn't sound at all like 7.1 virtual or otherwise. the headphone options are fantastic letting you pick your ohms for your headphone setting and also create per application profiles for headphones as well as speaker as opposed to having one profile which impacts headphone and speakers (but you do that if you really want). this is a brilliant card and the software is much improved so you can use it out of the box with no messing around or if you know what you're doing, can fine tune anything you want. my only worry is as with most creative products, driver updates and improvements are usually non existent so i hope they keep the software nicely updated. also, worth noting there is no way of powering headphone ports in your case with this card - a) because you don't need to with the external module and b) if you are spending this money on sound, you are probably serious about your sound quality and the quality is usually pretty poor from front headphone jacks on cases. finally, if you don't want to use the control module and simply plug the sound card in without, you can do so no problem.

Perfect upgrade
I had an old SB ZXR for many years and was very pleased with it's sound quality but recently had surround sound fail. I'm glad I bought the AE7 as it's a lovely card. easy to install and works great with windows 10. The drivers and software were easy to set up. Sounds amazing with a Denon sound system, VERY VERY pleased.

Excellent Card
I originally purchased the AE 5 back in 2017 and have had ups and downs with that card with regards to the audio quality. I decided to upgrade to the AE 7 and I'm not regretting that decision one bit. The audio quality is so much better plus the added bonus of having DTS and Dolby audio encoding makes this card sound fantastic. Playing games or watching films with the Logitech Z 5500 hooked up to this card is truly a cinema like experience. Creative have finally got their drivers sorted and the software it comes with is pretty good for audio custimisation. The only drawback I could probably say is the price, a lot of people will be put off paying £200 for a sound card but the quality difference compared to on board audio is huge. The card also comes with its own Audio Controller Unit which you can plug headphones into. This card also supports up to 600ohms so if you have studio grade headphones they will sound incredible.

Great
Great little sound card. I’d highly recommend it. The difference in audio quality was noticeable right away. It was nice and easy to install and the software works well. Looks pretty good too IMO.

Really great sound WHEN IT WORKS. Windows 11 + Creative Labs SW/drivers = Totally flaky !!
Really great sound WHEN IT WORKS !! Windows 11 + Creative Labs SW/drivers = Totally flaky !! What's worse is that these companies just don’t care that their mainstream consumer products don’t work properly together. Just read the forums (I wish I had before purchasing). It’s a real shame because I had a Creative Sound Blaster Z card in my old HP PC with Windows 7. It was a true plug and Play installation, great sound for over 5 years, totally rock solid and reliable operation with Spotify, iPlayer, Youtube, DVDs etc etc. Then I had to get new PC. Got a similar HP desktop PC -but now with windows 11 ☹ Decided to upgrade to Creative Sound Blaster AE 7 -given how good the Z card had been. What a nightmare !! Plugged in the card in PCIe slot -no problem, powered up fine, card recognised and driver active and set it as default sound source etc etc -seemingly active. Test tones active on all outputs from the card and headphone socket. But Windows 11 just kept on using the existing Realtek source -no matter what configs I selected… and the creative labs drivers and control software offered no help and neither did their “helpdesk”. Many, many hours later after reading countless forums and reports from other people with pretty much the same problem (going back several years), eventually got the card to be the source. But then the sound was terrible. So now spend more hours reading more forums how to match playback settings on the sound blaster card with the Spotify app. But if the PC screen saver activates or switch player apps it gets out of synch again and sounds terrible. Restarting the apps doesn’t work, -have to restart the whole PC to rectify…. Its totally flaky software compatibility -and you just know that the companies are well aware of this -and they just don’t care. Welcome to the real world I hear you say… yes, but it’s a shame… nothing ‘just works’ anymore.
