The Hawkman Omnibus Vol. 1

Although I've been a comic book fan all my life, I've only recently really gotten into the DC/Justice League characters after their recent rebooting of the whole line of DC titles; although I have to say that even though I like what they've done with some of the character reboots/updates, I haven't been too impressed with what they've done with the new Hawkman title overall (ESPECIALLY what the did to Hawkgirl on Earth 2-- almost completely unrecognizable from the classic Hawkgirl that she used to be!); but luckily this book is NOT a collection of that newly-rebooted (and too overly-armored!) Hawkman, but rather a collection of the entire run of classic issues written by the great Geoff Johns, one of the best (if not THE best!) comic book writers working in the business these days (who among other things, has also done great work with the Justice Society in the past, and he's currently the writer on the newly-rebooted Justice League, which if you're new to comics is definitely is one of the new titles worth checking out, between John's great writing and the beautiful art!); the characters are really well fleshed-out, and it gave me a new appreciation for the Hawkman mythos. If you're interested in getting into this character as well, I would DEFINITELY recommend starting with this collection and skipping the new "re-incarnation" of Carter Hall for now! And as for a couple of the other negative comments/reviews I've seen about the quality of the book/binding, I've had no problem with my copy whatsoever-- it's a beautifully-produced book worth displaying on your shelf!

If you're a fan of Hawkman and haven't read this yet you are definitely missing out! This collects Geoff Johns entire run on the Hawkman solo title and specifically collects Hawkman #1-25, JSA #56-58 and Hawkman Secret Files. This is by far the best modern run on Hawkman. There are new villains and classics that are amazingly creepy and Hawkman smashing things! What more do you want? A must own for any Hawkman fan.

Hawkman is one of the most convoluted DC characters mainly because I think different writers wanted to "do their own thing" with this character which led to a very confusing and inconsistent back story. However, Geoff Johns did a fantastic job of consolidating all the various different Hawkman threads and crafted a compelling character with a consistent back story. This omnibus contains issues 1 - 25 of the 2002 series plus JSA 56 - 58 and Hawkman Secret Files. Geoff Johns wrote these issues in collaboration with James Robinson for story and a slew of talented artists including my two favorites Rags Morales and Ethan Van Sciver. This is a hardcover volume and the pages are thick and sturdy -- well worth the cover price. Since returning from limbo, Carter Hall has had a difficult time adjusting to life on earth mainly because his soul mate, Shiera Sanders, who was reincarnated into the body of Kendra Saunders, does not reciprocate his feelings for her. Unlike Carter, who retained all the memories of his previous lives, Kendra does not. However, they agreed to be friends so she could get to know him better. Both Hawkman and Hawkgirl relocate to St. Roch to investigate the death of Kendra's parents (10 years ago). As the series progresses, both were able to explore their previous reincarnated lives. Other heroes who appear in these issues include Green Arrow (#5 ad #6), the Atom (multiple appearances in various issues), and various members of the JSA. Hawkgirl is a supporting character these issues. The omnibus ends with The Black Reign story arc covering issues 23 - 25 and JSA issues 56 - 58 where Hawkman and the JSA fight Black Adam in the mythical country of Khandaq. I hope (and wish) DC will publish a Hawkman Omnibus volume II for issues 26 - 50 (after issue 50, the series was retitled to Hawkgirl where Kendra Saunders takes over as the lead character). With out the volume II, it feels kind of incomplete.

I haven't read the entire book just yet, but I like it so far. Geoff Johns writing is as good as usual, and the art (in all honesty) is awesome!! No complaints there. But this is not a review about the story nor art, but about the edition iself. I give 2 stars to the book because the paper quality is very good. Strong glossy paper makes look the art even better than it is. This doesn't compensate the fact that DC Comics is going cheaper and cheaper with theyr collected editions every time. I'll give you an example of the unexcusable this is: 1. Once you remove the pretty dust jacket, you can see that the hardback is completely black. No letters not tittle on the book, which means that if by chance you lose the dust jacket, there's nothing on the hardback cover that identify the book. 2. Again, this is a book with glued binding (or cheap combination between glued and sewen). The result is that you can't get a wide spread in any page. Because of this, some art and some dialog is difficult to appreciate. Honestly, DC Comics is reducing costs in every single inportant stuff, and is getting old too fast. The prices go up, but the quality went down. This Hawkman Omnibus is nother slap in the face by DC Comics. How they expect people consider getting the upcoming $150 collections when the quality is THIS cheap?

For me, I love this book for both story and artwork as well. I am waiting for the volume 2.

I have a collection of GL and GL Corps graphic novels and i bought this book because of its author. So I will not comment on the content because it is the very reason why i bought this omnibus. Regarding the production, i think this is the 3rd or 4th (???) time I HOPED (now i think further hoping is just wasteful wishful thinking) that DC will wise up and start making omnibus the MARVEL way - OPEN-WIDE-AS-YOU-PLEASED SEWN BINDING !!! Oh well, enough of DC !!! NOTE TO SELF : NEVER BUY GLUED BOUND (is there anything else ?) DC OMNIBI (or OMNIdontBI ???) !!! Oh, darn ... i still have a pending order of Wolfman/Perez's The New Teen Titans Vol 2. But after that, that's it !!! To my fellow graphic novel collectors, ain't it time we say enough is enough to DC ???!!! As i said, DC is starting to look ridiculously and insultingly stupid !!! (sorry for the strong words) ... Am now looking forward to receiving my 3 MARVEL omniDObi (X-men vols 1 and 2 by Claremont and Lee and X-men Xtinction Agenda) to wash off my disappointment over DC OMNI(dont)BI !!!

Geoff Johns's Hawkman is good as a companion to the JSA, but not as good as Johns's JSA work. I recommend reading it after you have read the volumes of JSA that preceed it in paperback or in the (some say inevitable) omnibus of that. The art is also excellent. In response to some of the other reviews, I would like to say: 1. It is the complete run of the Geoff Johns issues. I have no idea why it states vol 1, when clearly (to me at least), the issues that immediately followed it were a huge drop in quality and did not even warrent a trade paperback at the time. Actually, if I remember correctly there was a couple of issues by Brubaker and Sean Philips that were good (but probably too short to make a collection in themselves, let alone an omnibus) and then it was followed by a Grey and Palmiotti run that is pretty forgettible. 2. This book has no ads or extras. I personally prefer no ads in the end of a book because ads make the book look commercial. This is an expensive hardcover, not a trade paperback or magazine, so this is a plus for me, unlike what one of the other reviewers stated. Extras would have been nice though. 3. The design of the book leaves much to be desired. The same picture of Hawkman is repeated over and over, and the vol 1 on the spine seems to use some kind of stock texture, which looks cheap. 4. Yes the binding is bad, but interestingly after you are through with it once, subsequent readings should be better because you "loosen" the book as you go along. Although, no this is no excuse for the bad production in the first place. DC seems to have fixed the binding issue with Teen Titans Omnibus vol 2. Its still not as bood as Marvel's omnibi but pretty good quality nonetheless. 5. The paper quality on this is actually very very good! Very thick glossy paper and the art looks excellent in it. At first I thought that the thick paper may have been part of the reason for the bad binding, but they seem to have used the same paper in Teen Titans Omnibus 2 and still sorted out the binding issues. The bottom line: If you like Goeff Johns, get it. The binding should loosen up over time and the stories are pretty decent. It is unlikely you will get these stories in a high quality hardcover for quite some time, especially with the New 52, etc.

my first Omnibus to start my collection I chose Hawkman fantastic omnibus would recommend to any one never read hawkman before it so was so easy to get into art work was beautiful and I love Geoff Johns work so win win

Das Buch ist sehr gut, aber ich erhielt Wochen, nachdem das Buch zugestellt, eine Rechnung vom Zoll, da die Omnibus-Collection zu leicht angegeben war. Den Fehler muss ich als Käufer zahlen?
