In the reviews, many people say the Netgear C7800 gets very hot. Has this been your experience, and, if so, how did you remedy it?

It didn't work long enough to get hot.

Does the netgear nighthawk cable modem wifi router combo (c7800) have battery back up?

No this router does not have battery backup and it is a piece of junk. I went through 2 of them in the span of one month. Both failed and had to be returned. On the 1st one every single one of the ethernet ports quit working. On the second one the 2.4 gigahertz and the ethernet ports all failed. I now have had a Comcast rental for a month and it is still functioning fine. Netgear has horrid customer service and their techs are all foreign and speak very little English. I highly recommend avoiding Netgear products.

I have a cable provider but I'm tryna do without anything involving cable payments. Now can anyone answer the w/o re asking a question?

If what I'm thinking you're asking is if you can have this and not pay a renting fee for what your provider would give you for renting their equipment, then the answer is yes. This is a modem and router that would be replacing the equipment you would be renting from the likes of xfinity. Buy this if you would like to save $150+ a year in renting fees.
