Rode RodeLink FM Digital Wireless Filmmaker System

Fantastic solution for recording video interviews with semi-pro camcorders and DSLRs. Yes, it's about 4x the price of the cheapest solution, but also about 4x better in sound quality, and much easier to use than more expensive pro systems. Dead-simple brainless hookup -- "it just works" (after you figure out how to put the batteries in) without any pairing magic or channel selection issues. Unlike other solutions below this price point, this is a *digital* transmission, which translates to a lower noise floor -- less hum, hiss, dropouts, and spurious noise than with analog transmission. I tried the Movo kit, and the level of hiss and hum compared to the Rode was unacceptable. Didn't try the Azden kit, I jumped straight to the Rode after watching a youtube head-to-head comparison review. The lavalier (lapel) mic sounds fantastic -- rich bass for nice chest tone, and picks up pleasant high-end sibilance from collar region. Includes spring-loaded pin mount, foam cover, and outdoor "dead mouse" wind sock. No instructions on how to attach the pin or covers to the mic cord, but given a diagram of the "finished" look you can puzzle out how to do it. Yes, the ultra-thin lightweight cord from the mic to the transmitter is fragile, but that also makes it easy to thread through clothing and minimizes cable rubbing noise. Love the positive-lock screw-in 1/8" mini-plug connectors -- you don't *have* to screw them in, but that avoids problems with talent or camera operators accidentally pulling out plugs and having no audio. Love the status display on the receiver -- shows battery level of *both* units, and indicates when talent unit is muted or shut off. Weight is heavier than cheaper units, but still fine to mount on camcorders or DSLRs (I measured 0.41 lbs for each unit). For use with a SONY 4K handycam and its recessed multi-interface shoe, I needed more room for my fingers to fit underneath the receiver, so I used a cold shoe adapter JJC MSA-MIS Standard Cold Shoe Adapter Converter for Sony Multi Interface Shoe Camcorder (Black) to gain an extra inch of height. There are internal level settings (0, 10db, 20db) on transmitter and receiver -- I like that, this setting is rarely changed (default is 0db on both and works fine) and there's no risk of accidentally hitting an external switch. On the negative side, the manual is super-dense (you'll need a magnifying glass) and basically useless, and Rode is the WORST at designing battery compartments. I had to search for a youtube video on how to put in the batteries!! You push in a plastic button on the back and then *slide* the *larger* piece to open -- very non-intuitive. Inside, the battery springs are *crazy* tight, if you don't have long fingernails you will need a small tool like a mini-screwdriver to pry out used batteries. Rode suggests Energizer Ultimate Lithium batteries for max life; but just be disciplined about shutting off units right after an interview and they seem to last a long time. Pros who want more channel options and XLR connectors and level/tone controls have lots of options starting at about 2x the price of this unit, but for hobbyists and semi-pros who want great wireless sound quality from a single mic without any fuss, this really is the best solution.

In a nutshell: Really amazing bit of kit for the price. The wireless LAV takes virtually no setup, pop open the receiver and transmitter, stick a pair of AA batteries in each, and turn them on. They find each other automatically in a matter of seconds, and I found that turning up the transmitter by +10db with the little switch was enough to have my subjects at speaking volume fall perfectly at -12db; no fiddling with sensitivity for long spans of time, no clipping, this thing just comes with a setting that is absolutely perfect for interviews, tutorials, and general dialogue. The sound is warm and crisp, surprisingly nice. All in all, there is nothing like it in this price range. The only downside of the system is that it is simply a 1-on-1 kit. One transmitter that pairs to one reciever, and from what I've read no way to buy more transmitters and pair them to a single receiver. If you need a kit for a panel discussion with multiple people, or you're trying to do film dialogue with multiple actors, this isn't the best solution. For those cases, you'll want to either rent gear or save up the extra $200-400 for a good sennheiser kit with multiple transmitters and lav mics. But, if you're an indie filmmaker on a budget just doing individual interviews or documentary work, this is an amazing deal to get you into professional sounding audio.

I shoot a lot of weddings, but I have shot 2 weddings specifically with this kit. So far I can say that the capabilities of this kit are amazing. They are great for first looks, and ceremony audio. Make sure you have rechargeable batteries for all your gear. I have a kit of 10 rechargeable batteries to make sure that I never run out of power with these devices. Typically we record a long video of the wedding ceremony with the officiator mic'd up. You need to do some testing with your Camera preamp; and I have noticed that if you leave most camera preamp's all the way down and let the kit receivers do the work, you will have great audio. These are so easy to use and connect to each-other, most of the time all I have to do is turn them on and they connect. We start recording before the ceremony so the packs staying connected is important, so far they have never disconnected and have worked flawlessly. I have read some reviews about the microphone cords being weak, and I would have to mostly agree. If you paired this set with a really good lav microphone you would be in great shape!

I've been using the RodeLinkFM Wireless mic setup for a couple months now. First impressions is that it's very easy to use. Plugging into my GH5 and turning it on and off...very simple. Batteries last a very decent amount of time. The reason why I purchased this was to be able to film and record auto-level audio at the same time without having to adjust levels or have somebody else run the audio. Very handy how the audio syncs up automatically to the video while recording on the camera. I have always used Sennheiser wireless mics with a H6 (or previous models) recorder. Despite having to adjust the levels manually, the Sennheiser with the H6 sounds a little bit better...has a more "full" sound to it. So with that said, this RodeLink Wireless setup sounds a little more hollow...but not by much. In post editing... I adjust the EQ a little and that helps. The only reason why I give it a 4 star is because the lapel mic and cable is a little cheap compared to a Sennheiser lapel mic. The clip broke off only after a few uses. I might have been too rough with it though trying to bend it back a little...but it broke off with little movement. I ending up attaching my Sennheiser lapel mic/cable onto this Rode Wireless set up. Other than that, price point is decent. The audio levels adjust very well with different point talking at different levels. Batteries last at least full day when used here and there. Very good mic for a "One man band" videographer. Just be careful with the mic clip and you'll be good.

Easy to set up, lightweight and works flawlessly with no interference (in NYC, a frequency overloaded city where Sennheiser ew 112-p were experiencing lots of static noise). They are bulkier that the Sennheiser but that's a small price to pay for such an excellent and stable sound quality. Works great with the lav mic that comes with the kit, but also with other lav mics i already had (e.g a dual speaker lav mic). The cable that comes with the kit is a TRS cable (for connecting the RX unit to a video camera such as a DSLR). It worked as expected with my Panasonic GH4. In addition, I also got this (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01N9CJDVE/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1) TRS to TRRS adapter to connect the RX unit to a smartphone and/or a laptop!

Definitely a great purchase. This is an excellent wireless mic unit. It's easy to set up and use. I used it to record a conference with about a 40 ft of distance between the units. It was a business conference and virtually all of the attendees had wireless laptops and smart phones working which never caused a problem. The units are a bit large/thick but they also feel solid and heavy duty. You can turn both units on and off from the receiver unit so if the talent pushes the button accidentally you can turn it back on w/o disrupting the program, or you can turn off the talents mic (bathroom break anyone), very nice feature. They set up and pair automatically. I got about 6-8 hours on a set of standard alkaline batteries (Rayovac). They're simple to use and don't break the bank. I have other Rode mics and expected this to work well also and it does.

I had heard about this system for months before it was released, and picked up one of the first ones dropped on the market. It's an excellent moderately priced wireless lav system that's just as good as the Sennheiser or anything else we've rented. We have been running with this in our studio for about three months, and the sound is surprisingly stellar! Very clean and crisp with very little interference over about 50 feet in a busy building strewn with satellites, microwave dishes, and WIFI. The batteries have surpassed my expectations too. The receiver will turn off if not in use after a while, so double check your audio if you get pulled away to do something else. I tend to avoid rechargeable batteries for wireless transmitters because they don't have quite as much power. The Energizer Lithiums work quite well and last several hours. If you want to plug into compressors and audio production racks, there's an XLR converter that's a few bucks that will make your life a little easier. Works well with my iPhone and Galaxy Note 4 too.

Excellent quality, really easy to set up and configure to get superb results. We needed to do in an interview in a tight space with windows facing a busy street--I was able to adjust the levels pretty easily and cancel out the vast majority of ambient noise and get a nearly crystal clear audio track. We were using a pretty economical set of wired lavs previously and they don't compare to the RodeLink system. I'm SO glad we upgraded.

Working excellent till now. Subject piece with mic was dropped accidentally on floor but still its working fine, so yes I would say build quality is also good. Easy to configure and simple to use. I am using this for recording sound for my videos published at Youtube Channel Youngoora You can watch videos to check the sound quality shot from a distance of more than 15 feet. Three levels of settings are very useful to adjust what you want to record. I was able to record clear sound of my subject even in noisy environment of lounge. Also doing decibel setting I was able to record interview using single unit (One mic tagged on the anchor collar). I really recommend this product to Vloggers and even outdoor shoots. Tengo una cámara Panasonic Lumix G80, y necesitaba un micrófono de solapa inalámbrico externo, con transmisor y receptor, para grabar en interior. Inicialmente compré un equipo 100 euros más barato que éste, pero a veces había microcortes en el sonido, o tramos con un levísimo ruido de fondo (pero que se oía en la grabación). Lo devolví y compré este equipo. Es perfecto, se sincroniza automáticamente (la primera vez hay que darle a un botón) en cuanto enciendes ambos equipos, marca el estado de las pilas de ambos en la pantalla, y ambos se pueden conectar por miniusb a una batería externa o enchufe, para evitar pilas. El sonido es bueno. No transmite por UHF como otros, sino que envía una señal digital codificada. Tiene 8 canales, pero de forma automática tiene siempre dos señales distintas conectadas, y si en la que está transmitiendo detecta interferencias pasa a la otra, sin que se aprecie ese cambio en la grabación. Desde mi punto de vista es una opción magnífica. Lo recomiendo totalmente.

I have two of these. They are simple to use and work flawlessly. We hide these little mics in hair and under clothing and they sound great. We had one lav mic go dead on us after 3 years, but Rode replaced it for us very quickly and without question under their 10 year warranty. For that peace of mind alone, I can recommend them.
