7+ years of use; driver troubleshooting; would recommend
Edit 1/17/2026 Still plugged into my computer nonstop since 2011. Working perfectly in windows 11 with my still-in-use xbox360 controllers. Original Review i bought this product about 7 years ago; in 2011, and it still works to this day. i used to have to go to microsoft's website to download xbox360 receiver drivers to apply to this product otherwise it would show up as "unknown device" in my device manager and be unable to sync. since the arrival of windows 10, microsoft has built-in xbox360 drivers and i am able to manually pick from a list of drivers on my computer to apply to this product instead of having to download on my own. cons: sometimes the pc forgets what device this is if you unplug it and it goes back to being "unknown device" when you plug it back in and you have to reapply the drivers to it. any other issues have been resolved by simply uninstalling the device and reinstalling the drivers. pros: it really did increase the amount of games i could comfortably play on steam and anything else that accepts microsoft controllers. it has been plugged in and on every time i power up my pc every day, for the past 7 years and it has not burnt out. whenever i ever had a sync issue, it was because of the controller im trying to sync itself having insufficient battery power and not the receivers fault. although... mine looks a little different from the black one with the word microsoft on it in the product picture though. mine is white on the top panel and gray on the bottom panel with the words "xbox 360" printed at the top and a green LED at the bottom of the front of the product. on the back it says pc wireless gaming receiver and the usual made in china and disposal logos etc. if i remember correctly, mine came with a pc drivers disc about the size of a gamecube game disc. i remember struggling with the drivers contained on that disc until i went to microsoft's website itself to download drivers which then did work more reliably. since then, windows 10 has made going to microsoft's website obsolete with the built-in xbox360 drivers on the system. to install: go to device manager and find the receiver (mine showed up as unknown device in the other devices section) right click the device and go to properties and driver tab and select update driver. you must select "browse my computer for driver software" and then "let me pick from a list of drivers on my computer" and go in the "xbox360 peripherals" section and select a receiver driver to install. after this point you should be able to sync a controller to it either the provider changed how the product looks over the years, or perhaps it is coming from a different manufacturer and the one i own whose quality i enjoy, may no longer be relevant to this exact product page even though this is the exact page i ordered from so many years ago.

Really cool device. Adds new functions and possibilities to your gaming computer.
I've been wanting this adapter for so long. I don't know what took me so long to purchase it. I keep plugging in ps4 controllers into my Windows 7 computer and while the controllers sync up just fine.. many of the games I play want me to use an xbox 360 controller so I spend so much time trying to figure out how to trick the game into thinking my ps4 controller is a xbox 360 controller.. and it never works quite right. I end up getting frustrated and never actually playing a game because of this. The game becomes, how do I google and fix my ps4 controller to work with this game, which is NOT a fun game. Anyway, to review this product I would say: Pros: * Works fantastic * Syncs up to 4 devices * (mine) came with driver disc Cons: * Was not plug-n-play for me * (since I do not like installing drivers from discs for fear they are already outdated) Had to sift through Microsoft website pages to find the driver * Have to restart computer for it to work The cons aren't bad enough to knock a star lol, installing a driver and restarting so I can play games with wireless controllers for the rest of eternity is worth it. For my test, I have 2 xbox 360 controllers collecting dust because I have a ps4 now and I never wanna use my xbox 360 anymore. I have them on a charging station so I knew they would be better used paired to my computer than just sitting there staying charged and collecting dust. As soon as I synced them up I opened up my Super Nintendo Emulator and tested setting all the buttons for player 1 and player 2 and it worked flawlessly. I have no complaints whatsoever. The Microsoft website says you can also pair an xbox 360 headset to this. I haven't tried that, but if that is true that is really cool! That opens up a new market of devices I can shop for to enhance my computers abilities.

Buy it now!
Summary: the product is great, works as expected, and WILL OPERATE UP TO 4 CONTROLLERS. Look past my auction site tip of the hat and have this shipped to you right now. I am a recent convert to PC gaming; my 360 and P$3 are slowly fading away. As my steamy pile of games increases I found myself wanting more and more to be able to use a trigger button as opposed to an awkward reach of the finger on the keyboard. After looking at a few different sellers of similar products I chose this one. Other listings seem to be knock off copies. I was willing to pay for the real deal. As other reviewers have pointed out, this product seems to be genuine M$. If it is a knock off, it is a first rate clone. There was a lack of proper retail packaging, BUT the product was secured in a proper electronics bag, inside bubble wrap with a software disc and literature; all appearing to be genuine and finally shrink wrapped. That's it; no clam shell or UPC. No big deal. As other reviewers have recommend, I did NOT utilize the included install disc, but instead did a search for basically the item description to locate the most recent software/driver. There are updates that were made to the driver/software since the release of the disc. INSTRUCTIONS: 1) Search for and install the official M$ driver/software available from their website. 2) Plug the hardware into your PC's USB port. 3) The device should be recognized. 4) UNPLUG ANY 360 that might be in range. Previously synced controllers will turn it on. 5) Push the button on the receiver. 6) Push the little button on the top of the controller (near the charger plug). . 7) The devices will sync. The little software HUD style display (when running) will show you if a controller is connected; in the same style of the 360. Cool. No problems so far with games, the bigger titles didn't even need adjustments to control input settings. By the way the device WILL work with up to four controllers. This makes the value proposition much better in my opinion. The listing pictures make it seem like it is the size of a common corded computer mouse. It is about half that size. What are you waiting for, stop reading this and buy it.

Woderful (EDITED JAN 5, 2013)
First off WONDAFAL is spelled correctly. It is a playful way of saying wonderful. Pros: It is not the white one it is the black one but it works perfectly. It does NOT feel cheap, very easy to install driver. controllers connect with ease once driver is installed, I do not know if the new 360 Slim controllers will work on it. supports up to 4 controllers (same as xbox 360) Has a very long cord and get 30 to 40 feet of range if the controller has full battery Cons: What cons? There is absolutely nothing bad about this product. I must also give credit to 5STARGAMING because this is where this came from. The shipping time said that it would arrive sometime between April 12 and april 29, I got it today April 10, 2013. VERY NICE RPODUCT AND WORKS PERFECTLY If you look closely at the end of my video review it shows me using my controllers analog stick to control the mouse of my computer. No I was not using the mouse because I had my hand full with the controller and the camera. It is very small but very versatile you can see how small it is in comparison with the size of my finger. I also show you in the video what it looks like in Windows XP Device Manager but I do not show how to install driver because I have already installed the driver. I will make a youtube video on my account and link it to this review when I do that. You have to hold down the button on the reciever to make it sync. You dont just press you need to hold it down for a srcond or two. I have has in plugged in and turned on for about two hours now and it isn't even warm, so it does not get very warm. I hope this review was helpful. **EDIT** **January 5, 2013** I have had this unit for almost a year now (Come April) I recently got a new Windows 8 Laptop. When I plug this into my computer the Windows 8 Operating System was able to recognize it right away and install the appropriate drivers from either the computer itself or Windows Update. Still give it 5/5 stars. I am still very satisfied with this product.

Works Instantly (On windows 7)
I wanted to use my 360 controller to play Games on my Steam account on my Laptop. I have a 17 inch Asus G74 ROG. As soon as I got the product, I inserted the CD it came with to install all the software. You can find all the downloads you need without the CD online, but the CD makes it easy for complete noobs. Anyway, I easily installed everything with the CD and then plugged in the receiver to my laptop via USB connection. I then synced my 360 controller by clicking the button on the receiver and then clicking on the sync button on the controller (the sync button isn't the same as the big xbox button on the center of the controller). After that, assuming you are familiar with how 360 controllers work, you should be able to have everything working after that easily. If you happen to be "new" to doing things like this, it doesn't matter because the receiver comes with a mini instruction manual. *note: you don't have to keep syncing the controller after the first time you do it. After the first time, you just have to press the big xbox button on the center of the controller to connect. I've been using this receiver for a while now, and it still works like new. I have also connected multiple controllers in order to play co-op with friends, so that's great. You can connect up to 4 controllers, so just like on a normal xbox 360. This product works, is easy to use, and durable. The only problems I assume people will encounter is maybe if you have a different Operating System (OS) besides windows 7. Apparently people had issues with the receiver on Vista and XP, but seriously, if you are still using Vista by now, just kill yourself, or catch up to the rest of mankind. There are ways to make the receiver work on Vista and such, but it takes longer. You can find instructions for that either somewhere among these reviews, or anywhere on Google. I love this receiver. Now I can play steam games with a controller with no problem.

NOT THE PRODUCT LISTED
Beware, because this is NOT a Microsoft product, as is advertised but rather a VERY cheap third party item. I can't find a logo on the device, so I'm not sure who made it, but the item itself is black (not white). You may not find this altogether inappropriate, but I was personally unhappy that HDE (the seller) was falsely advertising their product. The second issue I had was with installation: the item ships with no printed instructions, and those provided on the install mini-disc are riddled with typos and what I am assuming are poor translations. They also fall woefully short of covering the entire installation. After running the installer, the device would not respond. The device's troubleshooting offers no explanations for a this, let alone any sort of fix. I had to troll other user reviews to find a fix. Not cool. Not by a longshot. The final issue, and BY FAR the reason why I rated this product so poorly, is that the device loses its connection frequently. The Amazon entry boasts, "up to a 30-foot range". This is baloney. I can't keep a consistent connection WHEN I PLACE THE DEVICE WITHIN 6 INCHES OF THE CONTROLLER. Seriously. While playing Left 4 Dead 2 I was injured numerous times because the device would lose and then have to reestablish it's connection. I'd dock them a few points, but still be rather content if I could at least relax on my couch ten feet away and use the device worry-free. But I have issues when the two things are almost touching. Again, turning to the reviews I discovered that the device can have issues when used near other 2.4 Ghz wireless devices. Why this issue is not covered during installation, OR in the troubleshooting I can only guess (essentially, that they didn't want to own up to their inferior product). However, save for an iPhone in the room, and my 2.4 Ghz wireless router (which, according to reviewers should NOT interfere with the device) I don't have other wireless devices nearby. I will continue to attempt to make the device work, and if I find any success I will update this review. However if I cannot find a way to fix this I will be returning the device promptly. UPDATE: Call me a fool for not thinking of it at the time of writing, but I do have a 2.4 Ghz wireless mouse and keyboard. Silly me. Review still stands, because if your device can't coexist with other wireless devices IN THE WIRELESS age than your product is still inferior. Does anyone know if the ACTUAL Microsoft device has problems with other wireless devices interfering?

Setup is a pain, but it works great afterward
First - let me point out that I'm a geek. I love playing with tech, so when a bug pops up I'm perfectly fine with messing around in obscure menus until I can get it working correctly. That being said - let me tackle the one con I have first: ***Windows does NOT auto-detect the driver for this receiver. I ordered 3 of them, one for me, one for my wife, and one for my friend. I had to go through the same process in the device manager every time on every PC. It wasn't a fluke, it just doesn't work out of the box. You need to install the drivers from microsoft for the Xbox 360 Wireless Controller Receiver (pretty sure that's right), then go to the device manager on your computer (after you've plugged in the receiver) and find the unknown device. Update the driver manually, select "choose from a list of drivers on my computer," then find the driver on the list. And you have to do this every time you unplug the receiver and plug it back in. That's a pain. NOW FOR THE PRO - It works like a charm once it's up and running. If you don't plan on moving it around a lot and you leave it plugged in - it works like a dream. I've played Borderlands 2, Skyrim, Portal and various emulators with this receiver and an Xbox 360 controller and I've yet to have one issue out of it since I got it all set up. If you're a techie and have a little patience, you'll get along just fine with this receiver. If you're not technically inclined, I would recommend looking up a step-by-step setup. Bottom line - it was worth the hassle for me. I would definitely recommend this product for any gamer tired of using the keyboard.

15 feet through walls + a bunch of electronics, works great
Biggest question with wireless devices is the range. Essentially everything is limited to 30ft (sometimes 33ft), but there can still be varying degrees of performance within that range... its not uncommon to see issues. I was concerned because my media center/gaming PC is stationed in one room, with the display & audio (TV, AVR, 5.1 audio) in the other room (maybe 15 feet from couch to PC). Both the PC and entertainment center are up against the same wall, just in different rooms, meaning that the PC is *directly* behind the TV and AVR. So there is a wall, plenty of metal, and powered electronics right in the way of this receiver. You would not expect this to work. So with that in mind.... while this was in route to my apartment, I went and tested some RF stuff I had laying around to get a better idea of what to expect. 1. First I tried my Macbook Pro from work with its Bluetooth mouse (probably not the newer Bluetooth spec). Terrible results, in fact its almost not even a good test because I could barely get it to work 10 feet away in the same room with no objects in the way.... using full batteries. 2. Next I tried my Logitech wireless mouse (non-Bluetooth) with the receiver plugged into my PC. This worked better and was usable anywhere in the same room with no missed clicks, but I only got about 25% hit rate while on my couch in the other room. Not looking so good for this receiver, I thought. However, when it arrived I was pleasantly surprised. It works anywhere so I've just tossed it behind my PC and I don't have to worry about it. It's not laggy and no input gets lost, unlike my other RF devices which failed that test pretty hard. Keep in mind this is only about 15 feet distance ... albeit with drastic obstructions. Final thoughts.... Make sure you're using a good powered USB 2.0 port on your motherboard.... sometimes I wonder if people are having problems because its not getting enough power, or are trying to use USB 3.0. Use a port out the back of your motherboard rather than a front port.

Pleased With the Longevity and Range
I've ordered the receiver on two separate occasions now, the first order I received a white receiver and the second time a black receiver. They have both been genuine Microsoft products and work without a problem. With the end of a console era there are undoubtedly millions of wireless Xbox controllers lying around and this is the perfect way to keep them useful after upgrading consoles. I've been using mine to connect a controller to my media center for many months now and haven't had a problem with it at all. It reaches about 20 feet without a connection problem, further than that I have not tried. Anyone who is getting a new console and will be having some extra controllers left around should definitely consider buying one of these. If one doesn't have any controllers than I recommend buying a couple used ones for a heavily discounted price.

funziona a volte
non aspettatevi l'originale microsoft, ma non aspettatevi nemmeno che funzioni. il mio ha funzionato per 7 giorni a scatti poi ha smesso. per non parlare dell'istallazione su win7 64bit che è da fare in modo completamente manuale. PESSIMO
