The most important written work in English before the Norman Conquest, newly translated. Made up of annals written in the monasteries of Winchester, Canterbury, Peterborough, Abingdon, and Worcester, The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle marks the beginning of the unmannered simplicity of English prose. Immediately striking are the accounts of the Danish invasions and the unhappiness of Stephen's reign, together with the lyrical poem on the Battle of Brunanburh. Ranging from the start of the Christian era to 1154, the uniqueness of the chronicle as an historical and literary document makes it of compelling interest throughout. The historical, linguistic and literary importance of The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle is without parallel. Review: Excellent book - An excellent edition Review: Excellent reference book or a book to dip into - Excellent reference book or a book to dip into. Demystifies much of what is wrongly considered the ‘Dark Ages’. Michael Swanton expertly navigates the reader through the Chronicles whilst making what could be a very ‘dry’ read, interesting and informative in a ‘user friendly’ way.

It's a book I've been after for years. Got mine from Book Depository; but looking through it, it appears brand new and not s/hand. Also came in less time than stated. Nice to see my town 'Gainsborough' Lincs is mentioned a number of times. The place where the Viking King, Sweyne Forkbeard stayed with his son, to become King Canute, some time after his father was murdered in my town Feb 3rd 1014.

Invaluable resource
My son has found this book invaluable for his History Degree studies at York. Of all his required reading this book has been used above all other suggested reading matter and has been useful both for essay work and end of year exams.

History, Art & an Island of Information.
Anne Savage has put together such a beautiful book that I will be referencing from it for the rest of my life. After Edward the Confessor passed and the "Duke of Normandy" William the 1st conquered Harold Goodwinson (short time the King)at the Battle of Hastings and Harold Hardrada & his brother Tostig were slain at the battle of Stamford Bridge all records were lost or destroyed by William the Bastard, conqueror or the Duke of Normandy. It is said that ecclesiastical representatives compiled and chronicled the events and the monarchs from the time of Christ up till King Henry II. This edition was published in 1983 and like a snowflake no two are exactly alike which is why I treasure this book. The book is compiled in four parts due to the chronological order of the records. Each page is adorned with artwork of the time and trimmings along the pages borders. There are photo's, paintings and drawings of the era of the first millenium and so much information that it is a joy to look forward to opening the doors of history through reading this edition. This is an informative and beautiful book.
